Transferring Credits
In general, transferring from one institution to another can be a challenging experience. The receiving institution will always determine which credits will transfer. Transferring Credits to a Four-year Institution:
Four-year institutions typically require:
  • One-quarter of your total credits required for graduation earned at that institution. One-half of your total credits at a four-year institution. One-third of your credits be considered upper division (courses typically numbered 300 and 400). "C" grades or better on all transfer work. 2.0 or higher grade point average (GPA)
If you are unsure of where you are planning to continue your baccalaureate studies
  • Take classes which contain the words: Introduction, Appreciation or Survey in their course titles. Avoid preparatory or developmental courses unless recommended. Avoid state or institution specific courses (for example: in Nevada, a Nevada Constitution course is required. If you transfer outside Nevada, this course may not be accepted for credit). Keep hard copies of your catalog course syllabuses,

Accelerated Schools Center University of Nevada, Las Vegas jane@unlv.edu Welcome to the Accelerated Schools Center located at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. We are one of 12 satellite centers sponsored by the National Center for the Accelerated Schools Project located at the University of Connecticut. Our mission is to facilitate the initiation and continuation of accelerated schools across the Western United States. General Information Calendar of Events School Sites Links to Other Sites General Information The Accelerated Schools Center at UNLV was started in August, 1991. The center is located in the Curriculum and Instruction Department in the College of Education at the university. Adjacent to the campus is the newly opened Paradise Elementary School which is an accelerated school site. The center currently serves 19 schools in Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. The Accelerated Schools Project was launched at Stanford University in 1986 by Dr. Henry Levin. It is a comprehensive approach to school change, designed to improve schooling for children in at-risk situations. During his research, Dr. Levin was perplexed by the practice of remediating certain students. Though the practice of remediation is intended to allow students to catch up to their peers, research finds that remediation actually causes students to fall farther and farther behind the mainstream. Struck by the inequity of this system, he proposed a new kind of school where staff, parents, students, district office representatives, and local community members would work together to accelerate learning by providing all students with the challenging activities that have traditionally been reserved for students identified as gifted and talented. His viewpoint was that children caught in at-risk situations have exactly the same characteristics and potential of all children, including curiosity, desire to learn, imagination, and the need for support and affirmation. Consequently, accelerated schools are designed to bring all students into the educational mainstream by building on their natural strengths, and by having consistently high expectations for them, regardless of their background. Accelerated schools hold high expectations for every students, and provide each student with powerful learning experiences.

General Information
College students who want to go on to schools in the health professions (medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, optometry, etc.) can do so through almost any major. The trick is to add the right electives that meet the specific course requirements of the schools to which you, the student, will apply. You don't need to take a science-based major—even English majors, philosophy majors, and history majors can compete with the more traditional "pre-health profession" majors if they plan their college career with that goal in mind. The less science required in your major, the more science you will need to add as electives. Even though all majors have a certain number of elective credits, if your major is not a straight science major (biology, etc.) that often means you will need more than the minimum number of courses during your undergraduate years (the minimum at UNR is usually 128 semester credits for graduation). That shouldn't deter you, but it does mean you should plan well.

GUIDE TO SEARCH AND SEIZURE IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS BROCHURE PUBLISHED
Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa and Superintendent of Nevada Public Schools Mary Peterson, in cooperation with the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), have joined forces to publish School Violence: A Guide To Search And Seizure In The Public School Setting, which outlines the do's and don'ts of searching school children's belongings. There have been several well-publicized incidents of violence on school campuses over the last few years. Although schools continue to be among the safest places in America, Del Papa says, "Each day, serious offenses, including violent crimes and weapon and drug-related offenses, are committed by and against school children. These offenses endanger the welfare of children and teachers, and disrupt the educational process." Three basic areas are addressed:
  • Immediate intervention
  • Students' rights in search situations
  • Reasons to know and comply with requirements of the Fourth Amendment

In addition to the School Search Reference Guide, a checklist developed to help school officials understand and comply with the Fourth Amendment, which places limitations on search and seizure, can be accessed at www.keepschoolsafe.org

H ISTORY Although today's Incline Village was founded in 1959, its history is steeped in the lore of silver mining of the 1800's. The area was so named for the steep 4,000 foot rail tramway that shuttled logs over the summit east of the village for use in the silver mines in Virginia City, Nevada. At that time, Incline Village was completely deforested to supply timbers for the silver mines. Until development started in the late 1950's, Incline Village was just a stop on the road from Kings Beach to Glenbrook. Today, Incline Village has grown into a wealthy mountain community intended as a recreational paradise. Names such as Hobart, Whittell and Harrah have long been associated with the Incline Village area. When the Crystal Bay Development Company optioned 9,000 acres from Whittell and hired Robert Trent Jones to design the first Incline Village golf course - Incline Village was on its way. R ECREATION Incline Village includes three private beaches, one with a boat ramp, a tennis complex, two golf courses, Diamond Peak Ski Area, and the Incline Village Recreation Center (indoor pool, exercise equipment, aerobics classes, indoor basketball). All of these facilities are owned by the residents of Incline Village.
