LEAVING DISTRICT BEHIND: Reasons vary for exodus
... Crash courses unlikely in Nevada EMERGENCY AND ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMS Other states and school districts are using alternative and emergency teacher preparation programs to quickly staff classrooms, help minimize teacher shortages and broaden the pool of qualified teachers. Teach for Georgia, a fast-track teacher preparation program, was launched in June by the state and participating colleges and universities. Response from teacher hopefuls who already hold bachelor's degrees was double what had been anticipated in Atlanta, where state funding allowed only 120 people to go through a crash course this summer and apply for teaching positions in August. The teachers would receive provisional certification and be required to take additional college classes while being coached and closely supervised for their first two years of teaching. New York Fellows is a fast-track program for job switchers who hold bachelor's degrees and wish to work in New York City schools, where principals persistently have difficulties filling vacancies. Teacher boot camp includes four weeks of all-day classes on lesson plans, teaching methods and classroom management. More than 300 would-be teachers made it through the intensive training last year and passed two required state exams.

Community Colleges as a Pipeline for New Teachers:
How a PT3 Catalyst Grant is Working to Change State Policy There's much being said about the looming teacher shortage, but relatively little being said about a potentially powerful pipeline for the next generation of teachers: the nation's 1,100 community colleges. The Education Commission of the States (ECS) , with the help of a PT3 Catalyst grant, is studying and working to influence state policies on issues surrounding the role of community colleges as part of the solution to the teacher shortage. The grant is helping ECS's Center for Community College Policy pay special attention to what states are doing to prepare community college future teachers and paraprofessionals to use technology. The grant focuses on three grants in particular-Illinois, Texas and Nevada-with plans to expand. As a result of its involvement with the grant, the state of Illinois has embarked on an effort to develop technology modules for general education courses in science, math, communications and the humanities. Another grant partner, the Texas Association of Community Colleges, has surveyed two- and four-year colleges and found a critical need for technology integration. Several Texas community colleges are using technology to offer alternative certification via distance learning. At least one rurally isolated community college in Nevada is also using distance education to bridge the distance to an accredited program, providing the opportunity for students to earn a baccalaureate degree without leaving the community college campus.

National Teacher Certification at the Higher Education level. College Discussion Forums College Search and Selection October 2002 Archive : National Teacher Certification at the Higher Education level. By Dr. Salvatore Armond on Sunday, September 16, 2001 - 11:39 am Edit There is now a national teacher certification which is available to teachers at the private K-12, private and community college, vocational and trade school, and college and university levels.
The National Academy of Higher Education at www.nahighered.org offers this national credential with no testing, just proving you are qualified.
You must be presently employed as a teacher, supply two letters of referrence, and have at least two years of professional experience.
Even though it is not a governmental credential, a peer review by professional educators is a great addition to their portfolio of qualifications.

September 18, 2000 2000-R-0897 NATIONAL AND STATE TEACHER CERTIFICATION By: Judith S. Lohman, Chief Analyst You asked several questions about the relationship between Connecticut's system of teacher certification and certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). Questions and answers are listed separately below. Why doesn't Connecticut accept NBPTS certification in lieu of state teacher certification?
NBPTS is not intended as a substitute for state teacher licensing. State certification is mandatory and intended to ensure that beginning teachers meet minimum standards. NBPTS certification is voluntary and designed to identify experienced teachers who meet rigorous professional criteria.
In order to be eligible for NBPTS certification, a public school teacher must already have a valid state teaching certificate, a bachelors' degree from an accredited institution, and at least three years of teaching experience. A private school teacher who is not legally required to hold a state teaching certificate may receive board certification if she submits proof that the private school where she taught has state approval to operate. Is national board certification less rigorous than Connecticut's?
