Certification
A hundred years ago a person could enter the teaching profession with a relatively small amount of preparation. This is no longer true.
Entering the teaching profession has required increasingly greater training over the years. Teaching today requires better preparation because of the knowledge explosion and because more is now known about how children learn.
Today, virtually every state or province requires that prospective teachers hold a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree and a teaching certificate as well. To qualify for the certificate the student must complete a number of state-prescribed professional studies in education.
STATE OF MICHIGAN In the state of Michigan the student who meets these requirements receives the Provisional teaching certificate, either elementary or secondary, which is valid for six years. The elementary certificate qualifies him to teach kindergarten through the fifth grade and his major and /or minor in grades 6-8 (exceptions are available for smaller schools). The secondary certificate qualifies him to teach the seventh through the twelfth grades. During the six year period following graduation, the new teacher should complete three years of actual teaching and a minimum of eighteen semester hours of course work in a planned program of study in college or in graduate school to receive a PROFESSIONAL certificate.

by Pat Hickey arents have demanded that schools get better. Community leaders have warned that society can ill afford for them to get any worse. And for better or worse, the push to raise academic standards and improve student test scores has clearly become a national obsession. Nevada is no exception. Current expectations could hardly be greater. Feeling enormous pressure for schools to perform better, Nevada legislators and educators are now facing the test of their lives to meet those expectations. The Nevada Education Reform Act of 1997 mandates that higher academic standards be implemented in K-12 schools throughout the state beginning in fall of 1999. The State Board of Education has already approved higher benchmark standards in English, math and science proposed by the newly formed Council to Establish Academic Standards for Public Schools. BDR No. 1: Professional Development Centers Would allocate funding for the next biennium to establish and equip four regional centers for professional development (PDCs) within Clark, Douglas, Elko and Washoe school districts. Teachers and administrators would be trained in the new standards in measuring pupil achievement and analyzing and interpreting test scores, and in teaching higher-level content areas and basic skills such as reading instruction using phonics and basic mathematic computation.

    RECRUITMENT AND PREPARATION
U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley today announced the award of $43 million for 52 new grants to improve the quality of the nation's teaching force and reduce teacher shortages in high-need areas. "Research shows a direct link between effective teaching and student achievement," Riley said. "At the same time, many of our schools - especially those serving disadvantaged students and diverse populations - face critical teacher shortages and are plagued with high teacher turnover. If we expect to attract and retain high quality individuals to the field of teaching, we must reinvigorate the profession and give teachers the support they need to keep learning new and better ways to prepare today's students for the challenges of tomorrow's workforce. The grants we are announcing today are the critical first steps needed to improve teacher quality and help our states and communities put effective teachers in every classroom." Two types of teacher quality enhancement grants are being awarded: $33.4 million for 24 state grants and $9.6 million for 28 teacher recruitment grants. The state grants will support comprehensive statewide reforms that tackle critical system changes. These initiatives include:

Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.

Living Thursday, Apr 10, 2003 Education Posted on Mon, Oct. 07, 2002 Teacher certification pushed National board has approved thousands of applicants, but few in Pa. or N.J. take part. By Melanie Burney Inquirer Staff Writer WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP French teacher Catherine Russo is a novelty in her Gloucester County district. She is the only Washington Township educator to achieve national board certification and one of just 46 in New Jersey. In Pennsylvania, 47 teachers hold the honor. Russo, who teaches seventh and eighth graders at Chestnut Ridge Middle School, was certified in 1997 by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. "It's probably the most productive form of professional development I've ever done," said Russo, a teacher for 12 years. While national certification has been embraced by educators across the country, it has been slow to catch on in New Jersey. Nationwide, more than 16,000 teachers have received the certification. A new group will be named next month from among 20,000 candidates.
