Polish Study Courses
POL 470 The Other in Poland and Central Europe
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Central Europe has been invented in political practices and discourses that are constituted around the binary 'the West' and 'the Other.' By studying the historical development of this idea and its political determinants, we are able to contextualize and deconstruct the very process of 'constructing the other' as such. Some ethnographic characteristics will be studied in terms of how they have been used and abused in the process of (national) identity making. The social processes of stigmatization and the open or hidden concerns of such groups as ethnic and religious minorities, women, homosexuals, peasants, immigrants, workers, former state farm workers, the unemployed and the poor will be considered. The socio-economic and the ethnic modes of creating 'the Other' have important and often tragic consequences for these communities.

Canadian Culture I was recently asked about Canadian Culture - things people would want to know before visiting Canada. Simple enough question if you come from a country with a cultural history, but what about Canada? Italy, Germany, Japan, India, and many other countries all have well defined cultures steeped in hundreds if not thousands of years of traditions, customs and language. For most adults, just mentioning Chinese culture brings to mind any number of mental images, which clearly define for the person what Chinese culture means to them. But what about Canadian Culture? Our original settlers still maintain their culture as they have known it for over 5,000 years, but the Inuit culture didn't really catch on in the southern regions of the country.

New Brunswick Reunion Celebrates Acadian Culture
LIANE HANSEN, Host: More than 70,000 Acadians are in New Brunswick, Canada for a world-wide family reunion this week. The meeting is billed as the first repatriation since the English expelled French settlers from what's now Nova Scotia. Many Acadian descendants live in the United States, the best-known in Louisiana, where Cajun food and music is widely celebrated. In New England, however, the culture is waning, and many hope this reunion will help rejuvenate it. From member station WBUR, Jennifer Ludden prepared our report. JENNIFER LUDDEN, Reporter: Here in the drawers and on the shelves of the American-Canadian Genealogical Library in Manchester, New Hampshire, Acadian descendants can research their ancestors. Acadian names have married and melded with Quebecoi [sp] and English, yet the diligent can trace the generations all the way back to the first 47 families who left France to settle Acadia. CONSTANCE EBER-HAMILL, Director, Genealogical Library: [speaks French], and that's my name and my line. `Kaci' [sp] - that's `Casey.'

    by WorldWeb Travel Guide
One of the less well known parts of Canada for tourism, New Brunswick is nevertheless, one of Canada's most beautiful and unspoiled provinces. An area of large tracts of untouched forests and peaceful farmlands, river valleys, ocean islands, beautiful coastal trails and roads, magnificent warm water beaches, amazing cliff and rock formations, and much more; it is obvious that New Brunswick has an outstanding variety of interesting attractions and facilities for the traveller. The province's rich cultural heritage is an interesting one, with considerable influence from the original French-speaking Acadian settlers and from Empire Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution. New Brunswick is Canada's only officially bilingual province; most of the native French speakers also speak perfect English. For a good visual overview of this province visit our New Brunswick Photo Gallery An Aerial View of Fredericton, New Brunswick
This heritage is well reflected in the wide variety of events and entertainment, museums and in an excellent cuisine, which combines different ethnic and cultural roots with the easy availability of tremendous seafood and fresh produce. New Brunswick has an incredible selection of bird life and the high tides that the area is known for, have created a variety of natural phenomena. New Brunswick has three major cities.
