Geography
One of the Maritime Provinces, New Brunswick is bounded on the N by Chaleur Bay and Quebec prov.; on the E by the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Northumberland Strait (across which it is connected by bridge with Prince Edward Island), and Nova Scotia; on the S by the Bay of Fundy and Passamaquoddy Bay; and on the W by Maine. Its irregular coastline provides excellent facilities for fishing and shipping enterprises. Rivers cross the rolling countryside; they were the first means of transportation and are still important arteries of travel and commerce. The largest river, the St. John, crosses the province from northwest to southeast; the Miramichi River flows northeasterly and drains the central lowlands. Most of the roads parallel the rivers. Fredericton is the capital and the third largest city. The largest city is Saint John , the second largest Moncton . About half the population lives in urban areas. Sections in this article:

Jeff Ollerhead, BSc, PhD Guelph , MSc Toronto Associate Professor, Mount Allison University, NB jollerhead@mta.ca Specialization: Coastal geomorphology, optical dating, saltmarsh evolution
Research Interests: Dr. Ollerhead's major research interests lie in the areas of quantifying coastal evolution and exploring the utility of optical dating techniques for addressing geomorphic questions. Some associated research interests include the determination of coastal sediment budgets, saltmarsh sediment fluxes and evolution, and the use of geographic information systems in geomorphic studies. Current research projects: Dr. Ollerhead's research programme is presently divided into three main topics. First, he is currently working on a number of different projects to test the utility of optical dating techniques for determining the age and stability of various sedimentary deposits. These projects are based in New Brunswick, Ontario, and Oregon and they are all collaborative projects. Second, he is presently completing a research project at Cape Jourimain, New Brunswick. Cape Jourimain is the point on the New Brunswick shoreline where the Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island is attached. The first objective of this project was to document the shoreline geomorphology and sedimentary characteristics of Cape Jourimain as work on the Confederation Bridge began in this area. A second objective was to re-measure some aspects of the shoreline geomorphology at Cape Jourimain over the period 1995-2000.

Case Study D Lower Coverdale Community Web Site (New Brunswick)
Overview The Lower Coverdale community Web site project was implemented as a schoolwide initiative during the 1999-2000 school year at Lower Coverdale Elementary School in Lower Coverdale, New Brunswick, as part of the "Communities@ca." contest. Nearly 100 students, four teachers, the school's principal, and volunteers from the Lower Coverdale Access Center contributed to its completion. Students from Kindergarten to grade 6 worked together to present Lower Coverdale as a lively community. Student groups focused on different themes such as the community's geography and history. To do this, the students engaged in collecting data from the Internet and book sources as well as conducting fieldwork (interviews). Moreover, several students contributed their own creations ranging from texts and graphics to interactive quizzes and a directory of Web links, for publication on the Web site.

Located at the northwestern tip of New Brunswick, Edmundston is the same distance from Toronto as it is from New York. The city is midway between Halifax and Montreal, as well as on the highway linking the capital cities of Fredericton, New Brunswick and Quebec City, Quebec. It is worth remembering that Northwestern New Brunswick is a key pole on the eastern grid of the continent's geography (Canada and the United States). As such, it can be rightly said that the Northwest is more than a region, it is a crossroads at the boundaries of Atlantic Canada, Quebec and the United States.

    About Fredericton
Founded in 1684 by Amish fishermen, Fredericton is located on a bend in the St. John River Valley. The elevation, a quirk in the earth's axial tilt, and several local pulp and paper mills, together, have had an affect on the temperature, causing it to slowly rise over the last seventy-five years. On average, January temperatures range around 17 degrees Celsius and August temperatures around 26 degrees Celsius.
