GUIMAC HUNTING AND FISHING CAMPS
Quality Hunting and Fishing Services since 1933
Our Story...
Back in the 1920's my dad, Ralph Orser, was a young man who worked in the woods, as did most everyone in the area. Loving the outdoors as much as he did, it was only natural that he wanted to do something that would allow him to spend as much time in the woods as possible. What better way to do this than start a hunting and fishing camp for other people. In 1933 Ralph and his brother Weston opened Guimac Camps , named after the stream that it was situated on, the Becaguimac which, in the native language, means "river of big fish" . Starting out with one camp, they provided clients with guiding services in the vast and almost endless virgin forests of New Brunswick. They went through good times and bad, from dealing with people that knew as much about guns and hunting as the two brothers did about nuclear fusion, to experienced people who have hunted worldwide.
Through the years they expanded from one camp to a dozen. Back when I was "kneehigh to a grasshopper", my dad bought his brother Weston out, but Weston continued to guide and amaze clients with "tales from the past". Weston continued to guide into his early eighties and I can remember when hunters, who had never been here before, asked me who their guide was, and when I pointed to Weston, they would roll their eyes and look at the old man, stating " I hope we don't give the old geezer a heart attack". Well! Let me tell you that after the first day of trying to keep up with a man over six feet, with a huge stride, they soon learned to respect the old man and keep their comments to themselves! Weston died several years ago and I still run into people at hunting shows throughout the USA who knew him and his

On March 01, 1979, the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative became legally incorporated. The early years brought together a group of New Brunswick filmmakers, provided them with a pool of equipment, a working space and a sense of camaraderie. It also offered basic filmmaking workshops.
When many of the pioneer filmmakers moved away, a new wave of filmmakers arrived. The Co-op's equipment resources grew to include an Eclair NPR camera, a Nagra tape recorder and a Steenbeck flat editing table.
Advanced workshops were offered with outside professionals such as: Bill MacGillivray, Don McBrearty, Jean-Pierre Lefebvre and Giles Walker.
Today the Co-op boasts a membership of 200 strong. It's equipment resource has also grown to include a Super 16 AATON XTR, a DigiDesign Pro Tools non-linear sound editing suite, Media 100, Premiere and Final Cut Pro non-linear picture editing suites as well as a digital camera and other much needed film/video additions to the equipment pool.

History and Politics
The first, short-lived European settlement was made in 1604 at the mouth of the St. Croix River (on Dochet Island, at the Maine border) by Champlain and the sieur de Monts. France and England made conflicting territorial claims on the region, which, combining the present province of Nova Scotia and the coast of New Brunswick, was called Acadia The Treaty of 1763 under Paris, Treaty of When the population of Nova Scotia was increased by many thousands of Loyalists who fled New England after the American Revolution, New Brunswick was organized (1784) into a separate colony. As trees were cut down for shipbuilding, the land was cleared for farming. By the middle of the 19th cent. settlement was extending into the interior, and St. John was a busy port and shipbuilding town. Dissatisfaction with the arbitrary rule of the provincial governor resulted in the achievement of responsible (or cabinet) government in 1849. In 1867, under the British North America Act, federation with the other provinces into the dominion of Canada was somewhat reluctantly accepted. In 1960, Louis J. Robichaud, leader of the Liberal party, was the first Acadian to become premier of New Brunswick. He organized a program of equal opportunity, redistributing income to the poorer north, proposing new economic development, and instituting bilingual services to accommodate the province's steadily growing francophone population. The Progressive Conservative party came into power in 1970 under Richard Bennett Hatfield, who continued many of the programs begun by Robichaud. In 1987, in an unprecedented sweep, Liberals won all 58 House seats and named Frank McKenna premier. The Liberals retained power until 1999, when the Progressive Conservatives, under Bernard Lord, returned to power.

The History of Osty's In the seventies, Austin Turner opened a second Colpitts Men's Wear in Moncton Mall to serve the growing population to the north of Moncton. When they recognized that the marketplace needed a store that sold quality brand-name unisex clothing, Osty's was born. Many of Austin Turner's friends called him Osty, and the firm borrowed the nickname for the new store. Austin's son Greg Turner took over after his death in 1987 and became the fourth president of the firm. He has overseen many changes. Both stores moved to Champlain place in 1992, and began to expand their customer base beyond the Greater Moncton area. As with Colpitts Men's Wear, Osty's is known for their excellent service. Osty's is located in Champlain Place , and offers quality unisex brand named clothing. Hot brand-names such as Tommy Hilfiger, Polo Jeans, Guess, Silver, Levi's, Calvin Klein, Hollywood, and Ikeda, make it very popular with the 14 - 25 crowd of both sexes. Colpitts Men's Wear Ltd.

    New Brunswick: Daydreaming in history.
By J. Kirstan Nelson-Duac There I was…sitting in history class thinking, " There's a more fun way of learning this!" Why can't school be more like my life at Kings Landing? The teacher's voice droned on as I looked out the window. I recalled my summer days and the last time we were in New Brunswick, Canada. I was lucky enough to attend a living history camp at Kings Landing. They call it "Visiting Cousins" and that is what we all pretended to be for a week. I went with my two cousins, Scott and Jaime, and my big sister, Amanda. As it turned out it was really fun, even better than space camp. On the way there Scott was a little worried about what he would be doing during the week, no soccer or baseball. Actually, we were all a little nervous because we did not really have any proof that it was going to be fun. What if it was boring and we were trapped? To make things even worse Amanda said we could be in trouble because we didn't know anything about the history of Canada and probably all of the other kids would know plenty. That idea had not occurred to me. As I wondered if this was really a good idea we arrived at the back door of Kings Landing.

    History of Tabusintac
The first of the five waterways of the Miramichi Bay is the Tabusintac River on which the village of Tabusintac is situated. Off the shore of Tabusintac, towards the gulf, there is a line of sandy beaches or islands separated by the occasional gully. Between these beaches and the mainland there is a lagoon. Near the middle of the lagoon exists the broad mouth of the Tabusintac River. Travelling up the river you can see the many coves and creeks along it's banks. The head of the tidewaters is almost fifteen miles from the sea.
Dr. W. F. Ganong describes this area above the tidewaters as being "a clear and swift but smooth river of great charm, winding in a deep valley cut in places over one hundred feet below a plateau country" . The river abounds in sea trout and salmon, and the forest in lumber.
Tabusintac's most important natural resources are fishing, farming, lumbering and peatmoss. The first inhabitants of this area were the Micmac from whom the name of Tabusintac originated. "Tabusintac" is derived from the Micmac word "Taboosinkek" which means "place where two are". Rounding Wishart's Point one can see the significance of this name where you can see French Cove and the main river opening up like two large and equal sized rivers.
Along this river, the Micmac had three main villages - on Cains, Wishart's and Indian Point. Evidence of their inhabitation in these areas has been found in their burial grounds. Eventually, these tribes moved on to better grounds.
