Fruit crops The aims of the research on fruit crops are : to satisfy the local market demand for major fruits as citrus, bananas, mangoes, litchis, pineapple, avocados and for miscellaneous tropical fruits as passion fruit, guava, carambolas etc.. and some temperate fruits secondly to improve the quality and adequation of fruits for export and processing markets Therefore improved plant material are introduced and evaluated under the specific local climatic and soil conditions of New Caledonia. Local selection permits to save natural genetic ressources. The main criteria that allows the selection of varieties are the agronomic behavior of each variety : growing, tolerance to pest and diseases, ability of flowering, yield but also the production period in order to display products on the market for a longer period. The pomology and quality of each variety of fruit is also described in order to focus one specific market being sure that the product meets the demand. The sanitary constraints are also evaluated and methods of control with respect of environment of these pests are also priorities given in these research programmes. Updating the pests diseases inventory of New Caledonia, setting up and monitoring rational chemical control calendars, evaluation and diffusion of tolerant varieties against pests and diseases are the main objectives of this programme.

Visitors to New Caledonia will find a warm balmy climate, white sandy beaches lined with coconut palms and aquamarine lagoons teeming with fish. Experience the culture, a subtle blend of French traditions and fascinating Melanesian customs. New Caledonia is a place where romance, adventure and dreams can come true. The land is one of tropical variety and is the third largest South Pacific Island. Part of the unique attraction of New Caledonia is the "French Ambiance" described by many as a taste of France in the South Pacific. Noumea hums with late model European cars, chic French boutiques, all night discotheques, supermarkets bursting with French product, sidewalk cafes and superb cuisine. Bon Appetit. New Caledonia is made up of a main island and a number of smaller off shore islands the most visited being the Isle of Pines to the South. Aircalin, the national carrier of New Caledonia offers convenient daytime departures from Auckland every Thursday and Saturday. You can enjoy a short weekend escape or a long luxurious holiday. Aircalin - a touch of French sophistication.

issue 195 - May 1989 New Caledonia / Kanaky To many visitors, Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia, appears to be a French riviera town transported to the South Pacific. Its beaches, hotels and fake Parisian chic have long been a great attraction for Australian tourists. This is not surprising since New Caledonia is an overseas department of France. But many of the inhabitants prefer the post-colonial name of ‘Kanaky’ and this is one of the keys to the country’s deep racial and political divisions. The substantial French settler population, many of whom came from Vietnam (French Indo-China) and Algeria, have decisively changed the character of the territory leaving the indigenous Melanesians bitter. Only 43 per cent of the 150,000 people are indigenous Kanaks. The rest are European settlers and others, including about 12,000 people from another French Pacific possession, Wallis Island. The Kanaks say the Wallis Islanders were brought in specifically to alter the balance of the population structure. In the 19th century New Caledonia, annexed by France in 1853, seemed destined to become a tiny Australia with convicts and political prisoners sent out from France. Already by 1900 the numbers of Melanesians and Europeans was about equal. During the Great Depression many settlers departed to be replaced by others in the 1960s as nickel deposits were developed.

Pacific Islands Culture
South Pacific Handcrafts

There are three main groups in the Pacific - Melanesians, Micronesians and Polynesians.
The great migration to the uninhabited Pacific Islands started from South China about 30,000 years ago. Small bands of people with basic crafts crossed the seas to Indonesia and eventually colonized neighbouring Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Solomon Islands. Without navigation skills these Papuan people halted at the gateway to the vast Pacific Ocean. Subsequent migrations from around south-east Asia and Australia reached these islands and the people become collectively known as Melanesians.
Back in South China, new experiments had been made and the people had achieved the art of making a distinct pottery type called Lapita (it has fine white dots and other decorations around the tops and rim of the pots). A second great migration left with this new pottery and is known as the Lapita migration. These people brought with them more advanced techniques in farming and warfare. Their boats were larger and more stable and the navigators had greater skills to sail the open waters. This migration reached Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji about 1500BC. Some migrations progressed further east to find the still uninhabited islands of Samoa and Tonga.
The Melanesian people of PNG and Solomons followed this Lapita migration and are today dominant on Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji. Meanwhile, the Lapita migration reached Rotuma, Samoa and Tonga and about 200BC set out over the last stretches of open water to colonize Cook Island and eventually reaching Easter Island in the far east, Hawaii in the far north and finally, around 900AD, New Zealand in the far south and all islands in-between. The Polynesian triangle had been completed.

Building the nation in New Caledonia
Opinion Summaries Program Three Opinion By: Dewe Gorode (New Caledonia) In the 1980s, the French territory of New Caledonia was riven by conflict between the indigenous Kanak population, the French settler community and the French state. Today, representatives of the pro-independence movement FLNKS and the anti-independence RPCR share power in a collegial government. Dewe Gorode, Vice President of the Government of New Caledonia, describes the challenges of working together under the Noumea Accord. The preamble to the Noumea Accord, signed in May 1998, acknowledges the “shadows” of the colonial period and stresses the need for decolonisation. However, the Accord has delayed a referendum on self-determination for 15-20 years, disappointing many Kanaks who hoped for political independence before the end of the 20th Century.

The overseas departements and territories
The overseas departments and territories are a legacy of France's colonial past. Some have the same status as departments and regions in metropolitan (mainland) France, and some have greater autonomy.

Martinique, Guadeloupe, Guyana and Reunion Island, which became French colonies in the 17th century, are now the overseas departments or DOM.
All the DOM-TOM have mixed populations of European, African, Indian and Chinese and other ethnic origins, and relations between ethnic groups are sometimes strained (notably in New Caledonia).
Their economic situation is in many cases difficult, due to insufficient resources, and as a result the number of people on unemployment benefit or social security is high.
Agriculture (particularly bananas and sugar-cane) is the largest sector of activity, and the level of industrial activity is very low (though New Caledonia does have large nickel mines).
Tourism is growing but is still insufficient for prosperity, so the DOM-TOM are forced to rely on aid and subsidies from metropolitan France and the European Union.

The building has subsequently appeared in many architectural publications identifying this site as a significant contribution to world architecture. But more importantly indigenous people are also hailing the building as the first piece of architecture representing Pacific culture. This is surprising as the architect is Italian, the client is French and the location is the last of the Pacific colonies. .) By this he is referring to the adaptation of the open spaces and paths of traditional settlements for his building. The open space outdoor room typical of Pacific architecture has been covered in by Piano and the path that forms the spine becomes a corridor in the building. .) The building might be attempting to remain unconnected to the political events prior to it, and the leader it commemorates.
