Greenland
The Arctic Vikings The dramatic and fascinating history of the Arctic Vikings and Greenland's Cultural Heritage are closely connected.
  • Reconstructed Viking Ship sailing the Fiord of Ammassalik, North East Greenland. The ruins of Erik the Red's settlement in Greenland.
Erik the Red, the great Arctic Viking from Iceland, was originally a Norwegian who sailed west in order to discover new land, and he first settled in Iceland. In opposition to the Viking Discoveries of Western Europe, the settlement of the North Atlantic islands was rather pacific and inoffensive. The North Atlantic Vikings were not warriors in the traditional sense, but discoverers, and around 870-880 their travels ended up in the colonization of the inhabited Faeroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland. By the end of the 8th century all Icelandic soil was grown, the forests were felled, and the society had adapted a legislation generally accepted by everyone.
  • Map of Erik the Red's naval route from Norway, over the Faeroes and Iceland, Greenland, and further to present days' Canada. The dotted line indicates the Polar Circle. Greenland 1982. Erik the Red's ship sailing from Iceland to Greenland.

Laying the Foundations: Pre-Columbian Exploration and Colonization of the New World W. Robert Hagen A special edition of Life magazine recently ranked the top one hundred people and events of the past millennia. Christopher Columbus and his faithful voyage were ranked second in both categories. This list of course is arbitrary at best, however there is no disputing the change that took place on a global scale, effecting the economies, politics and the lives of ordinary people throughout the world, as result of his efforts. Although this Genoese sailor is given credit (or blame depending on your viewpoint) for this change, I believe that there is more than enough historical and archeological evidence to support the claim that Christopher Columbus was not the first non-native North American to land in the New World. Furthermore, there is strong evidence that people as diverse as the Phoenicians, the Vikings, the Irish, the Welsh, the Chinese, the Japanese and English fisherman were actually in the New World, in some cases, millennia before 1492. All totaled there are at least nineteen different groups of explorers that may have arrived in the Western Hemisphere prior to Columbus (Boland, xiv). Although some of these visitations are no more than myths, this paper will focus on the archeological evidence that exists to prove the point that Columbus was not the first visitor to the shores of the New World. Further evidence will be given by presenting written accounts of historians ranging from the ancient Greeks to modern times that seems to support this claim and accounts that were written has close to the events themselves.

The inhabited world north of the Equator is balanced by a southern continent and divided from it by water. Decorated with many wind heads.
The works of Macrobius, a fifth-century AD Roman philosopher, were of great popularity throughout the Middle ages. His neoplatonic commentary on Cicero includes, among many references to the pseudo-sciences, a geographic concept which is different from that of Ptolemy.

Women in Agriculture Tape #431 - Outmigration When you speak in the microphone, please give your name and where you’re from first and this afternoon it’s my pleasure to introduce Kay Young. Kay is co-owner operator of a Beef Forage Farm in eastern New Foundland, not too far from where the Titanic went down so I think maybe you can relate to where that is. Kay was a school teacher. She is the immediate, past president of the Canadian Farmwomens Network and she was elected to the House Assembly in New Foundland, and was the minister responsible for social services and also represented the status of women. Please join me in welcoming a very dynamic person, Kay Young.
Thank you Ann and I‘d like to welcome everybody here. I don’t know if a lot of people knew what out migration meant, because I had a number of people ask me, What is out migration? And I had to explain to them it was just people moving out of their communities and thus, it causes a bit of a ripple effect on everything that happens to our rural areas. The title of my presentation is Out migration-The Fallout and The Future.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT CANADA CLIMATE ABOUT BRITISH COLUMBIA ABOUT VANCOUVER CANADA PHOTO GALLERY ... LANGUAGE Introduction and Geography Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia. Canada encompasses territory from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and from the high Arctic to the northern border of the continental U.S.A. Although very much a "northern" country, the terrain and geography of Canada is very diverse. As well as the popular image of Canada as a country of pristine forests and snowy vistas, there are also deserts and badlands, temperate rain forests and long and wide beaches. Canada has huge inland lakes, seemingly eternal prairies and evergreen forests, woodlands and meadows. Canada's coastlines are thousands of miles long, with fjords, and long, wild rivers leading to the oceans. Government and Politics
Canada is a parliamentary democracy with a federal political system. Each province or territory has its own democratically elected provincial legislature headed by a premier, and also sends elected representatives to the federal parliament in Ottawa. The House of Commons is the main federal legislature. The prime Minister is the head of the political structure, as well as an elected member of the House of Commons where he must be able to command a majority. Bills passed in the Commons are forwarded to an upper chamber, the senate, for ratification. At present, the priminister appoints senators, although there is increasing pressure to make the upper chamber too. The nominal head of state in the British monarch, currently Queen Elizabeth II, and Her Canadian representative is the Governor-General.

NEWFOUNDLAND and LABRADOR
ORIGIN OF PROVINCE NAME: Italian seafarer Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot) landed on the island portion of the province on 24 June 1497, on the feast of St. John the Baptist. Cabot called the newfound land "St. John's Isle" in honor of the saint, but the contraction of "a newfound land" was quickly coined and became the actual name. The name of the mainland portion is believed to come from Portuguese explorer Gaspar Corte-Real who named the area "Terra del Lavrador," or land of the farmer. Officially called " Newfoundland and Labrador," but commonly known simply as Newfoundland NICKNAME: The Rock. CAPITAL: St. John's. ENTERED CONFEDERATION: 31 March 1949. SONG: "Ode to Newfoundland ." MOTTO: Quarite prime regnum Dei (Seek ye first the Kingdom of God). COAT OF ARMS: In the center, the provincial shield of arms has a white cross on a red background, with two golden lions representing England and two white unicorns representing Scotland. Above the shield is an elk. Supporting the shield on either side is an Aboriginal Canadian holding a bow. Beneath the shield the provincial motto appears on a scroll, with a grassy mound. FLAG: The flag, adopted in 1980 and based on Great Britain's Union Jack, has primary colors of red, gold, and blue set against a white background that represents snow and ice. The blue section on the left side stands for
