Ryan - Men's College Hockey Ryan is 18 and a big kid. He is 6'2" and 195 pounds. As a sophomore he was a starting defenseman on his high school team that won the state championship. His club team made it to the semi-finals of the nationals. Ryan's grades are Bs and Cs and his SATs are at 1020. Ryan wants to play Division One college hockey. It is September and Ryan is starting his Junior year in high school. EducationFirst! (EF) evaluated Ryan and concluded that he needs to improve his foot speed, his acceleration and his general conditioning and strength. At the same time, he has tremendous athletic ability, has great hands, and a powerful shot from the point. EF recommended that Ryan complete his junior year at his present high school and then repeat his junior year at a boarding school. EF also recommended that Ryan attend an intensive speed and acceleration program in the summer. ER worked with Ryan and helped him gain admission to Cushing Academy. While at Cushing, Ryan received a great deal of visibility from Division One coaches. EF helped Ryan prepare a Sports Profile, helped him create a list of colleges which were appropriate for his academic and athletic talents, helped him with his college visits and discussions with coaches, and provided guidance concerning financial aid. Ryan is now a defenseman at Boston University.

"We had to wear jackets as part of the dress code, and while mine was from Sears, theirs were Polo." Check out the White House's site on Prep for Prep Del Villar is an alumnus of Prep for Prep , a program that enables brilliant urban minority children to attend elite private academies in New York City and New England. And like many of the 1,200 students who have been through the program since its inception, he found himself caught between two worlds every day financially, physically and mentally. All of that, he says, was actually all to the good.

    - Aug, 1995 Issue #35 THE STRUCTURE SPECTRUM
(A tool for matching children with the right program)
by: Lon Woodbury Adapted from the author's article appearing in Sober Times, May 1995 So your child needs something more! Once again, you have to go through the pain and confusion of making a major decision that not only will impact the rest of your child's life, but can have an influence on the life of everyone around the child. The variables inherent in this process can be overwhelming. The trick is to find a school or program which provides a quality and professional experience, and fits the needs of your child. This is complicated by the fact that most programs look good at first glance, at least in their brochure, and most will say they think they can provide exactly the experience your child needs. Just as children's needs vary widely, so does the structure offered by schools and programs vary widely. Making the right match often is crucial for success. Overkill can be just as much of a disaster as underkill. Toward the higher end of the structure spectrum are schools and programs (length of at least six months) capable of handling serious psychiatric problems, while giving a quality experience of immediate consequences upon which the child can learn and internalize how to make better decisions (staying away from illegal drugs, self-discipline, trust, etc.). These are usually JCAHO approved, which requires the ability to handle serious emotional and mental problems.

    http://www.hunterschool.org/
The Hunter School is a private day and boarding school for children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and/or related conditions.
We view children with ADHD as possessing a powerful talent to learn and succeed. Children with ADD think faster and can perceive a wider range of stimuli than other children. They are, in fact, able to simultaneously perceive many things.
Thom Hartmann introduced the theory of hunters and farmers in his ground-breaking book, Attention Deficit Disorder: A Different Perception.
In its introduction, Thom Hartman states, "This book is the first I know of to present the idea that ADD is not always a disorder but instead may be a trait of personality and metabolism; that ADD comes from a specific evolutionary need in the history of humankind; that ADD can actually be an advantage (depending on the circumstances); and that, through an understanding of the mechanism which led to ADD's presence in our gene pool, we can recreate our schools and workplaces to not only accommodate ADD individuals, but allow them to again become the powers behind the cultural, political, and scientific change which they so often historically represented." The theory of ADD children is the idea that they are the "hunters" who are able to take in continuous stimuli and react quickly to changing circumstances. Whereas, non-ADD children are the "farmers" who are patient, methodical, and focused over long periods of time.
