People With Disabilities Work In Agriculture
For most of the over three million Americans earning their livings in agriculture, the work is not just their livelihood, it is their way of life; a productive and satisfying way of life of which they are very proud.
The Problem
Agricultural production is hazardous. The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service estimates that more than 200,000 farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural workers experience lost-work-time injuries and occupational illnesses every year, approximately five percent of which have serious and permanent results. Off-the-farm injuries; health conditions, such as heart disease, arthritis, or cancer; and aging disable tens of thousands more. The Breaking New Ground Resource Center estimates that more than 500,000 persons working in agriculture have physical disabilities that interfere with their ability to perform essential tasks on the farm or ranch. Additionally, thousands of children born into agricultural families have disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation, and epilepsy. Physical and attitudinal barriers often prevent these children from participating fully in farm and ranch operations, and from engaging in social and recreational activities enjoyed by other rural youth. The majority of people with disabilities who work or live in agricultural settings want to continue to do so despite their disabilities. All too often, however, they are frustrated in their attempts. Rural isolation, limited personal resources, gaps in rural service delivery systems, and inadequate access to agriculture-oriented assistance are among the obstacles they face.

Our school has eighteen classrooms which currently houses approximately 420 students with 44 full or part-time staff.
We have a very active P.T.A. that is involved with our school in many different ways. Members of this group conduct our annual fundraiser, coordinate and run after-school activities,hold various family activities throughout the school year, plan and fund many assemblies for our students and contribute to our school in many other positive ways.
We also have a very strong parent volunteer program at our school and parents can be found daily working with students and staff,helping to make our school a great place to learn.Our volunteer staff have received the Blue Ribbon Achievement Award for five consecutive years in recognition of their outstanding service to our school. This award is supported by the State of New Hampshire Department of Education and the New Hampshire School Volunteer Program
and is issued by the New Hampshire Partners in Education.

Community Stevens High School serves 700 students in grades 9-12 from Claremont, Cornish, and Unity. The City of Claremont has approximately 14,000 residents and is situated on the Connecticut River, adjacent to Interstate 91. It is equally distanced, approximately 30 miles, from Dartmouth College and Keene State College. Both rural and suburban in nature, the city is a mixture of industrial and residential areas. Its residents represent a mixture of middle class educational and occupational levels. The community was impacted by economic troubles but has been actively working to revitalize itself. School Students are offered comprehensive, sequential courses of study in college preparatory, general education, and technical education programs. The Sugar River Regional Technical Center adds 11 additional programs to our curriculum via two campuses, one located in Claremont, the other located in Newport, NH. Transportation provided by the Claremont School District allows access to programming at both campuses. The Claremont School District is a recent recipient of a 21 Century Grant to provide supplemental services to the student body, parents, and the entire Claremont community. Accreditation Stevens High School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges as well as the State of New Hampshire Department of Education.

Regina Delaney, Irish harper, singer, and dancer, performance in the gymnasium Afternoon session Dan Rothermel, PhD Putting the Pieces Together: The Teaching of Writing and Good Health Our keynote speaker, Dan Rothermel, has taught in classrooms in California, Arizona, New Hampshire, and Maine during his twenty plus years in public schools. During that time, his book of poetry, Sweet Dreams, Robyn (1991) was published about his family’s life during his daughter’s successful battle with leukemia and the National Middle School Association published Starting Points - Setting Up and Running a Writing Workshop and Much More (1996). In 1999, he earned his PhD in Reading and Writing Instruction at the University of New Hampshire and now teaches reading, writing, and secondary school language arts courses in the Education Department at the Eastern Connecticut State University. To date, he has eleven publications and twenty-seven presentations. Presented in partnership with the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire, as part of its Write Now! program, funded by a grant from the Department of Education under the provisions of Title II, Dwight D. Eisenhower Professional Development Program. This week, 30 states were named recipients of the first Federal and State Technology Partnership (FAST) awards administered by the Small Business Association (SBA). The awards range from $100,000 to $150,000, totaling almost $3.5 million. FAST, included in December 2000 legislation reauthorizing the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program, provides matching funds to enable states to augment or expand their tech business assistance and SBIR outreach efforts. Education and Awareness
The New Hope Center staff and facilitators provide free community education seminars. Seminars are provided in school classrooms and other public forums on a variety of topics to promote understanding and awareness of disabilities. This educational process is another key link in building opportunities for children with disabilities. Besides disability awareness, the staff provides training sessions and seminars on several other topics including: 1) Working with People with Disabilities, 2) Behavior Modification through Non-Violent Intervention, 3) Developmental Milestones, and 4) Children Affected by Prenatal Exposure to Cocaine. Gulf Coast Consortium for Individuals with Disabilities
The New Hope Center pioneered the establishment of a Consortium to network all local and regional organizations that offer services or support for individuals with disabilities. The Consortium includes agencies throughout the Mississippi Gulf Coast and is developing a directory of members and services to aid networking and cooperation between the members and to increase the awareness and delivery of services. This joint effort will increase the value and impact of services and support for individuals with disabilities. The Consortium will be addressing issues such as sharing resources, data, jointly sponsored programs and other ways to use the expertise and power of the combined membership.

reat Plains headquarters is in a suburban campus setting with three office buildings. Cubicles are arranged along the outer edge of the floors, to take advantage of the windows. The technical staff works in open, shared, and private cubicles. Standard office hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with flexible work arrangements in the summer. A typical workweek is 45 to 50 hours, with periodic overtime related to product releases. Travel for most on the technical staff is limited to one or two trips a year for conferences or training seminars. There are 15 telecommuters in the technical group. For most employees, commuting is 15 to 20 minutes. There are additional development sites in Watertown, South Dakota; Minneapolis; Seattle; Atlanta, Manchester, New Hampshire; the Philippines; and Germany.
