THE ETHOS OF
NEW HAMPSHIRE When European explorers sailed along the Atlantic coast, the native Abenaki lived in the area now known as New Hampshire. Captain John Smith landed here in 1632, and he reported seeing bountiful fish and wildlife along the rocky shores and the safe harbor two miles up a deep coastal river. Colonists did not come here to escape religious persecution but rather to work hard, establish farms, and prosper as good citizens of the Crown. These values inform the character of present-day New Hampshire, whose people are reputed to be fiercely independent, hardworking and conservative, yet tolerant — ideals hewn from the granite for which our geography is famous. When one preacher came to the Portsmouth area and regaled a congregation about how Divine Providence had led them to such a place of religious freedom, a voice in the back shouted, “Sir, you are mistaken; our main end was to catch fish!” New Hampshire has an eighteen-mile coastline of beautiful beaches. On the fine harbor at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, the first colonists founded the city of Portsmouth, historically a center of maritime activity and culture. Inland, the countryside quickly becomes hilly, eventually rising to some of the highest mountains in the eastern United States, including the towering Mt. Washington at 6288 feet.

Purple Lilac ( Syringa vulgaris T he purple, or common, lilac became an official New Hampshire symbol only after one of the biggest state flower battles ever. Politics played as big a role as natural history, perhaps bigger. The purple lilac became known as the flower of the home. In New Hampshire, it blooms in every town, village and city and on many farms. Rochester, New Hampshire, is known as the Lilac City . The lilac is the flower that school children used to bring to their teachers. The hardy shrub is symbolic of the hardy character of New Hampshire residents. Other legislators then filed bills championing the wood lily, water lily, goldenrod, and pasture rose. They were all dismissed, and a new bill was submitted to name the apple blossom the state flower! Many agriculturists felt the apple blossom would advertise New Hampshire's apple industry. But some people reportedly objected to the apple blossom because it had already been adopted by Michigan and Arizona. (Today, it represents Michigan and Arkansas.) There were also fears that the apple crop would be injured if people picked too many apple blossoms.

SimNew Hampshire
Unit Essential Question : How has New Hampshire's geography affected its economy?
Activity Essential Question: Why did areas of New Hampshire develop different economic foundations in the early 1800s.
Grade:
Discipline(s):
Social Studies (History, Geography)
MI Foci: Linguistic
Interpersonal
Spatial
Musical
Logical/Mathematical
Rationale: This activity will allow students to learn why mills developed in some areas of New Hampshire and could not in others; and why sheep herding developed in other areas. It will teach them map reading skills, allow them to exercise their deductive reasoning and compare/contrast skills. It will also teach them about New Hampshire's geography; as well as infrastructure and economic development as of the mid 1800s. Background: In the early 1800s New Hampshire's economy changed dramatically. With the beginning of the industrial revolution, and the knowledge of how to harness water power, textile mills were built in New Hampshire. They were built on either waterfalls or places where rivers dropped in elevation. These mills attracted many workers and became the starting points for many of our cities today. The importation of merino sheep from Spain produced a booming wool gathering economy in the rural hinterland. The wool (and meat) would be transported to the larger mill towns by rivers and canal, by turnpike roads, or (in later years) the railroad. Therefore, New Hampshire's geography had a direct correlation to which type of economy flourished in each New Hampshire town. towns situated on rivers with waterfalls or drops in elevation would develop mills. Towns without such resources, located in the hills and mountains, would raise sheep and ship the wool to the cities instead.
