Pros
Accurate flavor of much of NE countryside
Cons
Not enough about NE cities Full Review If Yankee Magazine didn't have an attitude, it wouldn't be about New England. Bossy and quirky, that's us. Full of tales of the old days, strong and self-reliant heroes and heroines, that's us. Ringing with nostalgia and reeking of a sense of preservation rather than progress, uh, sorry, folks, that us, too. Where else can you find full length features about rambling old farms with quince trees and cow ponds for sale that still hold an old tractor or two in the back forty but in Yankee? Where else can you swap your best Sunday go-to-meeting clothes for an old milk pail you can paint with Rustoleum and put on your porch or for an old-fashioned gizmo with a do-whop to do whatever one does with it? In Yankee you can find old Aunt Bertha's recipe for Cranberry fool or Apple betty, see framable pretty sketches of local flowers that are vanishing from the New England landscape, and absolutely stuff yourself full of stories about courage, faith, determination, perseverance, and gutsiness in the people of this hilly, rocky, often disagreeable land.

Pros
yes there are many pros in the mag...and bunch of amatuers too.
Cons
cons? Snowboarder and cons don't go in the same sentence! Full Review THIS MAG ROCKS THE HOUSE! Definatley a great magazine. It wrecks TWSnowboarding, in my opinion. It's got great articles which are fun and entertaining, as well as informative at the same time. What I love the most about this mag is it covers all areas of US and Canada, with additional featured articles from locations throughout the world. I think it's great how they give the East Coast so much play! I am a big magazine reader, and this is one of my favorites. It's a straight-forward type of magazine from real hardcore snowboarders. Snowboarder magazine is more of a magazine written by and for snowboarders who are really core. Transworld, in comparison is more of a status concerned magazine. Overall I were to be stuck on a deserted island and could ask for one magazine I'd pick Snowboarder. Who can resist a little humor from Pat 'the eYe' Bridges?!?! And we can't forget all the play from my lovely school-Plymouth State College of New Hampshire! What would the magazine be without Plymouth State? Hum...shots of riders Brian Barb, Liam Barrett were featured in recent issues to name a few, along with Brooke Geery (also of www.yobeatmag.com) who's behind the scenes in the mag. What else can I say? GO OUT AND BUY THE MAG TODAY!!!

Hurricane 1 of 3 The Hurricane
    September 21,1938
Facts, Notions and Trivia on the Fiftieth Anniversary When the 1938 Hurricane blew through New England on its way to Canada, the coast of New England caught the brunt of it: 494 dead, 4,500 buildings destroyed, 2,605 boats lost. It proceeded inland, following a path over northwestern New Hampshire. The North Country suffered enormous damage to forests but was spared extensive human casualties. Hurricane records from the Red Cross show eighty-four relief cases and two deaths registered in Grafton County, but only eight cases were north of Plymouth. (One of the deaths occurred in Woodsville.) Coos County registered three cases and no deaths. Carroll County registered no cases at all. By contrast, Hillsboro County, which includes Manchester and Nashua, had 742 cases and eight killed. The death toll in the North Country was low because the storm, although it was moving at sixty miles per hour, did not reach the White Mountains until early evening. Had it hit during the work day, as it did in southern New Hampshire, more lives would certainly be lost. But the North Country suffered far more devastation than the Red Cross statistics indicate. Much damage to homes and other property was not reported because of the independence, price and reticence of North Country people. They would not request help from the Red Cross of any other agency. Ernest Poole, in his book, The Great White Hills of New Hampshire, describes a typical reaction: "When the State and Federal governments sent agents with forms to be filled out by those who needed aid, one rugged farmer, who was grimly starting repairs on his wrecked house and barn, took one look at the form and remarked: 'Jest one more of them government papers. Why in hell can't the government tend to its own damn business an' leave me to tend mine?' "

Observer Al's letter especially tickled cartoonist Mike Marland who cultivates people in high places. But seriously, if you want to rename a mountain... Ossipee Volcano For Sale Dish-Enfranchised In Vermont New Hampshire elected officials have so far resisted renaming mountains. In Vermont, however, legislators are debating a ban on TV satellite reception dishes because they are ugly. (No! Banning ugly legislators is not even discussed!) Until the event of the Dish, North Country people who lived in the hills received maybe two channels. One of them was snowy. They could not subscribe to cable TV because the legislators had already regulated and taxed the cable industry to a point where the cost of serving rural customers was prohibitive. So, the Dish represented freedom from the broadcast monopoly. It meant Sesame Street and C-Span. Hillfolk saved their money and built Satellite dishes, sometimes trimming a few trees to give the dishes a clear shot at the heavens. Or, they put the suckers in a nice open field. Perfect!

Welcome to a site dedicated to those of us who are seriously afflicted with a very addictive and highly contagious malady best described as celestial voyeurism. Luckily, the affliction is not fatal.
I live in southern New Hampshire, USA, where most of our national storm systems pass through and mess up the climate on an all-too-regular basis. On bad nights I do my homework. On good nights I am out there with my equipment . Either way, I usually post a log entry the next morning.
The idea here is to provide interesting, meaningful stuff about the most important objects currently passing in review these nights and the stuff you see here is more or less my working notes on these objects. Needless to say, my new book is based on these efforts and goes into greater detail.

Montgomery County scored a major victory in its battle to ban gun shows when a federal appeals court on Tuesday vacated a lower court's ruling that had declared illegal a 2001 county law restricting such shows. The law sought to cut off county funding to any public or private organization that allowed gun sales and firearms displays. As a result, the privately owned Montgomery County Agricultural Center in Gaithersburg, which had received about $500,000 in taxpayer money, temporarily refused permission to Silverado Promotions of Frederick to host its semi-annual gun shows at the facility as it had been doing since 1990.

MD: Gun shows take hit with federal ruling
The head of the oldest U.S. black civil rights group on Thursday testified in a lawsuit his organization brought against handgun makers that he was 'tired of going to teen-agers' funerals' and blamed the gun industry. Kweisi Mfume, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn that he became an anti-gun advocate because of the violence he witnessed as a child. Lawsuits against gun makers have not had much success, but the NAACP is arguing in a trial that opened on Monday that gun violence disproportionately kills poor, urban blacks and it accuses gun companies of not doing enough to stop it.
