Penobscot Times sold to Kirkland Newspapers

The Penobscot Times, a 114-year-old weekly based in Old Town, Maine, has been sold to Kirkland Newspapers Inc. for an undisclosed amount of money.
The Times has a paid circulation of 3,686 and serves Old Town, Orono, Bradley, Milford, and a few other parts of Penobscot County.
Bob Kirkland, owner and president of the North Carolina-based Kirkland Newspapers Inc., bought the weekly from David Wollstadt early last month.
Wollstadt, who bought the paper in 1974 from Barbara McKernan of Bangor, Maine, said that after nearly 30 years, the paper had to take a back seat for him.
"It is time to transfer ownership to someone who is able to give full attention to running the business," Wollstadt said.

The Right Finds a Niche on Campus
Posted Aug. 19, 2002
By Daniel George Media Credit: Young America's for Freedom D’Souza tells how conservatives are making concerted efforts to reach out to young people. Are today's college students eager to shed the values and ways of life they've learned from parents they haven't listened to for years … ever leftward leaning, sexually promiscuous and living the Playboy life in dorms shared by both sexes?
Not the average American college student, not by a long shot. Seated in a packed convention hall at George Washington University in the nation's capital this summer, 300 clean-cut and conservatively dressed young men and women talked politics, then went silent as all heads bowed in prayer before dining. During the week, this picture repeated itself as college students from around the country listened politely to prominent speakers who did not once blame the United States for the world's woes. Indeed, these speakers championed the virtues of Judeo-Christian heritage, urged conservative activism and spoke of the importance of public service.
This was the annual convention of Young America's Foundation (YAF), but it was no isolated event. Conservative students all across the country these days are more and more assertive in voicing their political convictions, drawn together in opposition to liberal campus orthodoxies that now seem as archaic as Trotskyism and the Flat Earth Society.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION
University of Nebraska at Kearney
When a position vacancy arises, the Search Committee and/or hiring department must determine the means necessary to inform potential candidates of the vacancy and make a good faith effort to recruit a broad applicant pool including members of protected classes. Increasing the breadth and depth of the candidate pool increases the probability that the committee will find outstanding candidates. A broad advertising approach is also more likely to yield the most diverse pool of qualified applicants, including women and minority persons. The appropriate scope of advertising depends upon the position type and affirmative action goals for job groups where the underutilization of women and minorities is evident.
MAKING A GOOD FAITH EFFORT
With Office/Service Positions, the primary responsibility for advertising a vacancy is placed with the Human Resources/Employment Management Office. Hiring departments are expected to assist in the promotion of the position vacancy, however. For Academic/Nonacademic professional positions, the Search Committee must make a good faith effort to increase both the size and diversity of the applicant pool. Although specific requirements for advertising both types of positions are set forth in the Hiring Guidelines, search committees and hiring departments may want to consider additional options, such as the following, to ensure a good faith effort is made.
  • Request each member of the department/division to assist in searching for candidates from the protected class groups.

Media Hides Truth about the War
Archive Current Issues Author: Terrie Albano, Associate Editor PWW First published Dec 13, 2001 by the People's Weekly World Newspaper When polls include the possibility of civilian casualties, Miller found, support for the war drops even more, including in the U.S., which was one of three countries whose majority supported the war. Miller concludes that the most fundamental problem with the polls is that they assume the public has all the information. But the majority of the U.S. media has been distorting what is happening in Afghanistan, especially in the coverage of civilian casualties and alternatives to war. Many would agree that the U.S. corporate media, with a few notable exceptions, is pro-war and pro-Bush and that agenda prevents them from doing the job of a free press, which is to inform the public.

And make stuff Knight Ridder Newspapers SANTA ANA, Calif. - Wander through Greg Tate's apartment complex in Huntington Beach, Calif. Stop, scratch your head, check the address, stroll around some more. Get lost in the Mediterranean-style stucco. Wonder why every apartment is painted the same shade of ecru. Search for a number. "You found it," Tate says, 15 minutes later, after you've finally stumbled upon his door. "They do all kind of look alike." He smiles. "Until you get inside, that is." Inside Tate's apartment, on the coffee table, is a lamp made from a tire jack and a car air filter. Another lamp, still unfinished, is an upside-down tomato-plant cage adorned with bundles of polished glass. It's possible to walk into many young people's homes these days and tick off the furniture as if you were flipping through a catalog. But a growing movement of people - like Tate - adorn their living areas with unique, do-it-yourself accessories, often made from found objects. An end table from old computer cases. A skirt from a pillow cover. Candlesticks from decommissioned sink and shower knobs.

you are here: Free-Market.Net Spotlight Declaring war a threat to freedom Declaring war a threat to freedom The terrorist attack of September 11 has been called an act of war; voices have been raised in Congress and across the country to respond in kind. Given the deep transformations that wars of the past have made in U.S. society, Americans should be aware of the likely effects of a new round of hostilities no matter how necessary a response to these crimes may be. In 1918, Eugene Debs, a perennial Socialist presidential candidate who was something like a Ralph Nader of his time, was tried, convicted and sentenced to ten years in prison. His "crime" was a speech in which he criticized the conviction of several World War I-era draft resisters and opponents of conscription. Debs didn't enjoy freedom again until President Harding commuted his sentence on Christmas Day of 1921. In the post-Vietnam era, the idea that an American could be jailed for opposing the draft is almost inconceivable. But in times of panic and emergency, the inconceivable has a way of becoming real in a myriad of unpleasant ways. The Constitution itself explicitly allows for only one emergency power: The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it.
