The University of South Florida Foreign Language Education Programs for the professional development of teachers are approved by the State Department of Education. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and the College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
How Can you Become a Certified Teacher?
Certification to teach is determined by the Florida State Department of Education. A degree is awarded by the University. Students who complete the M.A. Plan II in Foreign Language Education offered by USF will be certified to teach K-12 because the degree program is approved by the State of Florida. The Planned Program developed with the faculty advisor shortly after the student has been officially admitted, if completed, will result in the awarding of the degree and certification. Upon completion of the degree, certification as a K-12 foreign language teacher will be placed on your transcript. This indicates that you completed an approved State of Florida teacher education program qualifying you, based on your course work, to be certified at the K-12 levels in foreign language education. You will need to take the FTCE [Florida Teacher Certification Exam] and receive passing scores on the subject area exam and the professional exam section. FTCE must be passed and scores must be on file in the Internship Office prior to the conclusion of the student internship.

Reciprocal Agreements with Other States New York has interstate contracts with more than 30 other states and jurisdictions. As outlined in the Interstate Agreement of Qualification of Educational Personnel , a person prepared in one of the contract states who meets the conditions of the contract is eligible for provisional certification in New York. The conditions are either (1) completion of an approved program of teacher preparation or (2) possession of a valid certificate in the contract state and service under that certificate in three of the most recent seven years. In addition, applicants must obtain qualifying scores on the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations Enhanced Reciprocity Leading to Conditional Provisional Applicants who meet the above requirements, with the exception of the testing requirement, may apply for a conditional provisional certificate. This certificate is valid for two years, during which time the teacher must satisfy the examination requirement for a regular provisional certificate. If the candidate has satisfied the testing requirement at the end of two years, a regular provisional certificate will be issued, valid for five years from the effective date of the conditional provisional certificate.

    Reciprocal Certification
All of the programs in teacher education at UMCP are fully accredited and lead to teacher certification in the State of Maryland , which is reciprocal in most other states. A listing of the states with which we have reciprocity is provided below: NOTE: The listing in the table below is taken from the NASDTEC website, http://www.nasdtec.org/report.tpl Alabama Alaska Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut Delaware Florida Georgia Hawaii Idaho Illinois Indiana Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine Massachusetts Michigan Mississippi Montana Nebraska Nevada New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico New York North Carolina North Dakota Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina Tennessee Texas Utah Vermont Virginia Washington West Virginia Wyoming Dictrict of Columbia NOTE: Several of these states require prospective teachers to meet additional ancillary requirements (e.g., additional teacher candidate assessments and/or courses, higher GPA requirement, etc.) in order to be fully certified. In many cases, the incoming teachers are issued an initial certificate, which enables them to begin teaching, and they are given a specific time line for fulfilling any remaining teacher certification requirements. For further information about a particular state, contact that state's Office of Teacher Certification. (This state listing is subject to change without notice.)

Certification may be obtained in Elementary (K-8), Biology (7-12), English (7-12), Math (7-12), and Social Studies (7-12). Education courses are offered at Franklin Pierce College campuses in Nashua and Portsmouth on weekday evenings and weekends. For course schedules, click here . While the program is designed for individuals who possess a baccalaureate degree in the intended area of certification, people who have academic concentrations in other areas may also be admitted. The certification plan for such individuals may be somewhat longer than that for those whose undergraduate degree is in an appropriate field. The program culminates in a 16-week practicum commonly known as student teaching. This is a full-time experience in a local school and may occur either in the fall (September - December) or the spring (January - May) once all other courses are completed.
