Public Outreach and Community Involvement
Engaging Parents and Community Members
Both increased parent involvement in children's education and the simultaneous outreach to and education of the community are critical to improving learning opportunities for all children. Through public outreach activities, the Mid-Atlantic Eisenhower Consortium and its partners are making the public increasingly aware of the need for all sectors of the community to provide students with opportunities to learn and to meet high standards. Collected here are a number of selected online resources from a variety of organizations that support both parent involvement in schools and outreach activities to the larger community.

What needs emphasis today is the political significance of the family. A people whose marriages and families are weak can have no solid institutions. Michael Novak Why do we hear so much about the family nowadays? The stories seem to be either negative (i.e., stories of family violence and failures to properly care for their young and old, the breakdown thesis ), reformative (e.g., the Christian Coalition 's Contract for the American Family), or where have the "good old days" gone (i.e., federal statistics showing rising divorce rates, how three in ten births are illegitimate, or the disappearance of the Ward and June Cleaver family model) in tone. Perhaps all of the attention owes to shared assumptions that relationships between family members is prototype for all other social relations, that the family unit is the fundamental building block for all societies, and that the family is society's shock-absorber of social change. One cannot, for instance, expect a person to do more for a stranger or an acquaintance than what he/she would do for a family member. And, as Michael Novak observes above, if the family breaks down not all of the remaining institutions can put "society" back together again.

New Jersey's Response to the World Trade Center Disaster
On Tuesday, September 11th, the United States experienced the worst terrorist attack in its history when hijacked commercial airlines were deliberately crashed into both of the World Trade Center towers in lower Manhattan. Another jet plowed into the Pentagon complex, and a fourth fell short of its target, crashing in rural Pennsylvania, after heroic passengers resisted the highjackers' attempts to redirect the plane toward the White House. Ultimately, both of the Twin Towers collapsed, killing more than 2,800 people who were unable to escape, as well as countless police, fire and rescue personnel who rushed into the towers to assist them. In New York, New Jersey and surrounding areas, a Presidential Disaster Declaration was made, opening the channels for a variety of different types of federally-funded assistance to the families of those who died, survivors and witnesses of these tragic events. Some of the funding is dedicated to providing crisis counseling services to those impacted by these attacks.

Comparing State Educational Resources
-An Overview-
The factors described before influence school quality and effectiveness in every state, but as you are probably aware, public school systems differ in certain ways from one state to another. The most obvious differences are due, of course, to the variations in states' resources. For example, Connecticut has a much higher tax base than Louisiana, and consequently, can make more dollars available for instructional materials, teacher salaries, and facilities. You may not know about the differences stemming from the diverse ways that states organize their school systems. For example, in most states each town has its own school system, but in Florida, Georgia, and West Virginia (among others), schools are organized on a COUNTYWIDE basis. As a result, the school systems in those states tend to be very large, both geographically and in numbers of students. Consequently, if a family moves from Massachusetts to Florida, children may experience culture shock in the new school system. Accustomed back home to a small system in which officials were easy to contact, the family will now have to learn to cope with a large educational bureaucracy. Even the terms school officials use can vary from state to state. For example, not every state uses the term SCHOOL DISTRICT or SCHOOL SYSTEM. In Virginia, school systems are called DIVISIONS; in Louisiana, they are known as PARISHES. In Indiana, some schools are known as CORPORATIONS, while in Texas great pride is taken in distinguishing school systems as INDEPENDENT, and New York uses the term FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT. Moreover, in over a dozen states some school systems are identified by number as frequently as by a name.
