Located in Gatun Lake, part of the Panama Canal waterway, BCI is a field station operated by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Students will be able to talk with the Willises and their associates directly from this forest location through live videoconferences. Researchers will talk about their experiences, their research projects, and ecological principles, and will answer students' questions.
The Willises created the Rainforest Connection, an interactive email project, seven years ago. The husband and wife team write regular journal entries for students back in New Jersey, where they live most of the year, and students may correspond with the team in Panama. The Rainforest Connection is coordinated by PRISM, which provides services to school districts in the teaching of science and mathematics. Palm Awards $2.3 Million in Technology Grants to U.S. K-12 Schools and Colleges
Educators Will Study How Handhelds Affect Teaching and Learning

CHICAGO, June 25, 2001 In its second round of grants from the Palm Education Pioneer (PEP) program, Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) today announces it is awarding $2.3 million in Palm(TM) handheld units to elementary and secondary schools, colleges and universities to enable innovative teaching and learning, and to gain insight into how handheld computers affect teaching and learning. This research will help determine best practices for integrating handhelds into curriculum and teacher training. Palm named the grant recipients on the opening day of the National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) here at McCormick Place.
Palm, a pioneer in the field of mobile and wireless Internet solutions and a leading provider of handheld computers, awarded grants to 87 individual K-12 classrooms and nine "research hubs" for a total of more than 175 classrooms. The first PEP grants were awarded to 15 K-12 schools in January. SRI International's Center for Technology in Learning (CTL) in Menlo Park, Calif., administers the program, and develops and conducts evaluations to study the learning uses, experiences and effectiveness of Palm handhelds for teaching and learning. "We believe that partnering with educators in doing research on the best practices and impact of handheld computers in education is one of the most important projects we can undertake," said Mike Lorion, vice president of education markets at Palm, Inc. "Research from PEP grants gives educators valuable insight into how handheld technology can be used in teaching and learning. This information helps us to create tools that evolve with the needs of education. We added new research hubs to broaden our research and also extend some studies into the college pre-service and in-service environment."

NJ ASK Testing Dates

New Jersey’s new state tests for third and fourth graders are known as the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge, or NJ ASK3 and NJ ASK4.
Commissioner Librera said the new tests respond to a need on both the state and federal levels to assess knowledge and skills of elementary and middle school students. Through the Early Literacy Initiative, the state has set a goal to have every child reading at grade level by the end of the third grade. The dates for testing in Montclair Public Schools are as follows: NJ ASK3 (3rd Grade) - 5/20, 21 and 22

Bringing nanotechnology into K-12 classrooms posted by JimLewis on Tuesday February 11, @09:14PM
A EurekAlert Nanotechnology essay by Stephen Danforth, Chair , Department of Ceramic and Materials Engineering, Rutgers State University of New Jersey titled Student Excitement is a Big Factor in the Future of Nano argues that nanotechnology should become an integral part of future science and engineering curricula. Danforth is looking at the appeal of nanotechnology to students as part of "a dialogue with social science faculty in our Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy to look at nanotechnology's role in society."
From Student Excitement is a Big Factor in the Future of Nano In 2001, Rutgers' School of Engineering received a $2.5 million Workforce Excellence grant from the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education. Under this grant, Lisa Klein, a fellow ceramics and engineering professor, and I have two mandates develop not only a state-of-the-art interdisciplinary undergraduate curriculum in nanotechnology, including expanding faculty and equipping labs, but reach out to high schools, middle schools and even elementary schools about the subject. Danforth describes nanotechnology outreach to high schools in which Rutgers professors "worked with groups of six or seven high school students doing projects in nano" and summer "nano interns" in which high school students spent "eight weeks here with grad students and faculty, working in the lab, touching things, and coming up with ideas." The University also held "Nano Days" for high school teachers and students.
