SURVEY IDENTIFIES HUNDREDS OF SCHOOL-HEALTHCARE
PARTNERSHIPS
TRENTON, March 26, 1999-A survey released today identified several hundred programs in which New Jersey public schools were able to provide health programs for students by establishing links with local hospitals or healthcare agencies. The survey, "Getting Children Ready to Learn: School, Healthcare and Community Partnerships," is the first effort to document the growing number of alliances between schools and healthcare organizations in the Garden State. The New Jersey School Boards Association and the New Jersey Hospital Association collaborated on the project. "It's common sense: A child who doesn't feel well can't learn well," said Charles V. Reilly, NJSBA president. "Many school leaders find they can raise the standard of health for their children by working with the experts in their own community. This publication will be a useful resource for communities that want to begin or expand a school-hospital partnership." NJSBA polled school districts throughout the state, and found more than 570 health programs being offered by some 200 school districts. At the same time, the New Jersey Hospital Association polled its members and received an additional 330 responses.

Wellness Program Management Advisor Program Planning The three-day program, which covered disease prevention, nutrition, stress management, physical fitness and general safety, actually had its genesis in previous in-house health promotion attempts that did not pan out, Miranda-Sixto said. "The hospital administration was always behind a health promotion program effort, but prior wellness projects designed for hospital employees had not worked," she said. "The administration said they would endorse another effort if we could come up with a new approach." "That survey was a one-page screening tool. We used the employees’ top choices and responses to form the basis of the three-day program," Miranda-Sixto explained. "Now we have something we can use to build an ongoing health promotion program."

Associate Dean, South Jersey: Ann W. Tucker, D.Ed. History: In November 1973, the Board of Trustees approved a concept document for the establishment of the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-School of Allied Health Professions (CMDNJ-SAHP). In October 1976, the document was approved by the New Jersey Department of Higher Education and the School became a separate entity within the University offering eleven certificate programs on the Newark Campus. To better reflect its broadened scope, in 1981 the SAHP became the CMDNJ-School of Health Related Professions (SHRP). In 1987 the School applied to the New Jersey Board of Higher Education to seek degree-granting authority. Subsequently, in February 1988, the School attained approval and initiated the B.S. in Clinical Laboratory Sciences with nine collaborating public and independent colleges. The Flexibility Legislation of 1992 enabled the University to extend its degree granting authority to include all undergraduate programs.

SENIOR HEALTH SERVICES GOAL:
Our main goal is to reach out to seniors who do not regularly visit a physician and make them aware of the health risk factors for this age group. Screening tests are not designed to diagnose a disease, but to detect possible abnormal health problems and channel the patient to their physician to prevent complications. Early diagnosis followed by early treatment- by a physician - is beneficial to the patient, by alleviating symptoms or postponing mortality or both. Our fitness goals is to help people stay fit for daily living as long as possible. Good health habits, and good fitness habits go hand in hand and both can be fun. Our programs are made available by the Hunterdon County Department of Health and through the Hunterdon County Office on Aging and by community contributions.
