I have worked extensively at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Joslin Center for Diabetes, and with numerous internal medicine, endocrinology and cardiology practices. Discussion Boards Back to Home ... Living Thursday, Apr 10, 2003 Health Posted on Mon, Mar. 17, 2003 Future is hazy for antismoking initiatives in N.J. A tobacco settlement is mainly helping the state budget, not programs to prevent smoking. By John P. McAlpin Associated Press TRENTON It took years to rip the money from tobacco companies, and it came with the promise of cutting health-care costs and paying for ways to reduce smoking. Now New Jersey's money from the national tobacco settlement is nearly gone, promised to pay off loans needed to balance the state budget. And those antismoking programs? They may be going, too. "If the public had the notion that the state was saving its budget by selling off hundreds of millions of bonds from the tobacco settlement and not using the money to pay to stop smoking, and it's just been used all up, I think they would think it's a scandal," said Jonathan Foulds, who heads an antismoking program at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Antismoking activists and public-health experts insist that government-funded programs to help people quit smoking work. They point to studies showing that smoking rates for teens and adults have dropped and to surveys detailing the high cost for medical treatment to the state.

Health Groups Sour Over New Dairy Campaign Several leading associations say the new "3-A-Day" drive doesn't stress low-fat fare, and that it borrows too heavily from another campaign. By Kathleen Doheny
MONDAY, Jan. 27 (HealthScoutNews) Food fight! Just when the health-conscious public was getting familiar with the "5 A Day" campaign the one that urges us to stay healthy by eating five servings of fruits and vegetables daily along comes the "3-A-Day" plan. It may sound like a quick-fix way to skimp, but it's not. "3-A-Day" is a new campaign by the National Dairy Council, the folks who helped made milk mustaches chic. It urges us to eat enough dairy products, including milk, cheese and yogurt. "5 A Day" was begun in California with a National Cancer Institute grant and then taken nationwide in 1991; now it's a private-public partnership that includes government agencies and fruit and vegetable industry organizations. The "5 A Day" folks don't seem to think imitation flatters. They have fired off a letter to the dairy council, asking it to dismantle the campaign. Representatives from the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and other organizations signed the letter.

FNS Release No. 0002.03 Jean Daniel (703) 305-2286 USDA DEPUTY UNDER SECRETARY ANNOUNCES INCREASED FUNDING FOR NEW JERSEY NUTRITION PROGRAM ELIZABETH, N.J., Jan. 24, 2003 Deputy Under Secretary of Agriculture for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services (FNCS) Suzanne M. Biermann today announced increased funding for the New Jersey Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition program. The increase is a part of President Bush’s 2004 budget request which includes record-level funding for USDA’s Women, Infants and Children Program. The $4.77 billion request is a $43 million increase over the FY 2003 request and represents a $737 million increase since FY 2000. “President Bush understands the vital role nutrition plays in children’s development,” said Biermann. “This budget increase recognizes that WIC works, and is helping mothers in New Jersey and across America provide their children with a healthy and nutritious start in life.” Biermann toured the WIC Community Nutrition Center in Elizabeth where she met with state officials and local WIC administrators about the increased funding and the benefits for low-income local residents. “State and local organizations are key partners in ensuring that WIC works,” said Biermann. The President’s new budget will allow local WIC programs, like the one Biermann visited today, to provide benefits to nearly 8 million low-income mothers and children across the country in 2004.
