http://www.sedl.org/policy/insights/n11/
Some states have produced impressive results, winning wide public support for groundbreaking accountability procedures. Texas, for instance, has gained national recognition for its insistence on holding schools accountable for helping poor and minority students meet the same achievement levels as other students. Its efforts have been rewarded with not only higher test scores, but also with the ability to remove some schools from the ranks of "low performing." Insights on Education Policy, Practice, and Research reviews some of the assumptions, tensions, and lessons in the current accountability movement as well as the progress states in the region have made in implementing their accountability policies. From time to time, it also draws on the experiences from other states across the country. Insights on Education Policy, Practice, and Research may be reproduced and copies

Web-based In early 2001, we asked the State Archivists to tell us what educational programs their agencies and state historical records advisory boards (SHRABs) had in place for a variety of audiences. Please note: The information in the table below was gathered through the broad question "What is your state archives/SHRAB doing in the following education areas?" Accordingly, this is not intended as an all-encompassing summary of what the respondent states are doing, but rather, a sampling of the types of educational activities being undertaken at this time. Educational Programs for State Government Employees Summary: Of the thirty-three states included in this category, twenty-nine responded that they provide regular workshops and/or daily training for state records managers (six provide both). Only nine of the states indicated that they have manuals or retention schedules (CT, ME, MO, MI, OR, PA, SC, TX, WY), six of them are available on-line. Michigan and South Carolina have outside funding for state records education (NHPRC). Oregon is the only state providing Web-based training for state government at this time. States and Territories

Overview of the Office of the State Auditor
Agency Overview: A matter of quality and timeliness
The New Mexico State Auditor's Office and independent public accountants from around the state have worked together during the past year to improve the quality and timeliness of the audits upon which other public bodies rely.
Audits by independent public accountants have come under more thorough review by the State Auditor's Office.
The State Auditor returned numerous audits for additional work last year, and accountants have responded favorably to the quality review.
When the state's leaders prepared the New Mexico Constitution in 1911 for impending statehood in the following year, they created a strong, independent auditor's office to oversee how government officials would spend taxpayers' hard-earned dollars.
In 1968 a state court said the State Auditor's Office should serve as a completely independent representative of the people, accountable to no one else. It should have the power, duty and authority to examine and review the activities of government officials and entities receiving money from state tax revenue, the court said.
The Office of the State Auditor conducts and oversees audits of government entities, making sure they are completed in a timely and efficient manner within professional standards. The State Auditor's Office then reports to the citizens of New Mexico on the accountability of state and local governments. New initiatives are also proposed wherever possible to improve management in government.

About NMEAF The New Mexico Educational Assistance Foundation (NMEAF) is a private, nonprofit corporation created by the New Mexico State Legislature in 1981. To fulfill our commitment to the future of education in New Mexico, we work with educational and lending institutions, state and federal government agencies, and individuals interested in education in the state. We also abide by the Open Meetings Act.
At NMEAF, our mission is to provide programs and services that promote the broadest possible access to higher education for the greatest number of people in New Mexico. We are one of the most active lenders in the state, providing various types of educational loans for students and parents.
NMEAF supports the statewide participation of other lenders in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) by providing a secondary market for the sale of student loans. This allows students to borrow from a local lender and when their student loans go into repayment, have them sold to NMEAF. The NMEAF Advantage Programs offers students several different ways to reduce the cost of their student loans.

The following perspectives show how transition planning may be enhanced. Self-Determination Self-determination is broadly defined as the ability of individuals to control their lives, to achieve self-defined goals and to participate fully in society. "Self-determination instruction during the elementary, middle, and secondary transition years prepares all students for a more satisfying and fulfilling adult life," explains Michael Ward at the Center on Self-Determination at Oregon Health Sciences University."Our focus is to promote the sharing, development, and application of knowledge on the expression of self-determination by individuals, families, and communities." One of the Center's activities is coordinating the Alliance for Self-Determination, a national partnership of organizations representing a broad range of efforts and constituencies. The Alliance grew out of an OSEP project but now is supported by Alliance members. The Alliance aims to build and support leadership among researchers, policy makers, advocates, and funders. According to Ward, the Alliance has four principles:
