Introduction
Partners Education Conservation "Mining for Habitat"
Bats and Mines Publications

The Bats and Mines Resource Publication details bat/mine habitat relationships, mine assessment and inventory techniques, and bat-compatible mine closure methods. It is the only resource of its kind available to land managers seeking information and solutions to the bats and mines issue. Since its publication in 1994 (revised in 1998), over 10,000 copies have been distributed to all major wildlife management agencies and leading mining companies. Copies can be obtained by contacting: Sheryl Ducummon, North American Bats and Mines Project Director, Bat Conservation International, Post Office Box 162603, Austin, Texas, 78716; (512) 327-9721 or sducummon@batcon.org Workshops
"Mine Assessment for Bats" workshops have provided hands-on training to more than 750 natural resource managers from over 70 government and private agencies. These three-day workshops focus on the ecological and economical importance of bats, value of mines as bat habitat, status of bat conservation, survey and monitoring techniques, mine safety, species identification and natural history, mine protection for bats and human safety, abandoned mine liability issues, and interagency/private cooperation agreements. Trained participants return to their home areas empowered to undertake mine projection projects, safeguarding countless bats though their own efforts.
