http://www.nmarts.org/ed/ed_task_force.html
Arts Education Task Force NMA has completed an Arts Education Task Force to determine the Agency’s goals for Arts Education. The following are the recommendations made to New Mexico Arts: I. ADVOCATING FOR ARTS EDUCATION, TO DECISION MAKERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC Effective advocacy is needed to educate policy-makers and the public about the significant contribution that arts-based learning can be making in New Mexico's schools and communities. The arts are often considered to be an "extra" by administrators and school boards faced with an educational crisis. The critical message is that quality arts education, integrated into a student's learning program, is often the key which unlocks the opening toward the goals that educators are striving for: quality teaching, student and teacher retention, improved test scores, and enthusiastic learning. These benefits must be evidenced throughout the educational decision-making system, and the necessary resources for institutionalizing arts-based learning must be dedicated. Four of the nine Task Force strategies address interrelated aspects of a successful advocacy plan: A. COLLECT RELEVANT ARTS EDUCATION IMPACT DATA

SOCORRO, NEW MEXICO
Socorro, a community of 9,000 in the sunny Rio Grande Valley of central New Mexico, combines the pleasant climate of the high desert, peace and quiet of a small town, and sophistication brought by a state university.
History
Distinguished as one of the oldest settlements in the Southwest, the city's name means "refuge" or "aid," and dates back to 1598 when people of the Pilabo Pueblo fed and sheltered weary members of the Juan de Onate expeditions. The arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1880 made possible extensive mining for ore, and Socorro quickly became New Mexico's largest town. A decade later mining opportunities had declined and Socorro returned to its agricultural heritage. However, the brief boom left as a legacy the New Mexico School of Mines (now called New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, or New Mexico Tech), which has helped to define this city as one of New Mexico's leading centers for education and research, home to one of the state's highest percentages of Ph.D.s per capita.
Demographics and Weather
Inclusion of county residence brings the area population up to about 23,000, with a median age of 30 years, 47% claiming Hispanic origins. Sitting at an elevation of 4,585 ft. above sea level, Socorro is particularly proud of its dry, sunny weather with an average July temperature of 61-93 degrees F, an average January temperature of 25 to 55 degrees F, and an average annual rainfall of 6-9 inches. Snowfall, which begins in late October, averages around 6 inches.

  • Alverno College Faculty Assessment at Alverno Colleg e (Rev. ed.). Milwaukee, WI: Alverno Productions. Alverno college faculty have defined eight general student outcomes that form the basis of their instructional program and their assessment activities: effective communications ability, analytical capability, problem-solving ability, valuing in decision-making, effective social interaction, effectiveness in individual/environmental relationships, responsible involvement in the contemporary world, and aesthetic responsiveness. Each of these outcomes has four levels at which students may attain certification through their course work. This publication explains how the Alverno Faculty has designed and developed its assessment system.
  • Association of American Colleges Strong foundations: Twelve principles for effective general education programs . Washington, DC: Author. This report was prepared by participants in AAC's Project on Strong Foundations for General Education. The collection reflects the thinking and discussions of individuals involved in shaping general education programs across 17 diverse institutions, and attempts to address three questions: "(1) What characteristics do successful programs share? (2) What common strategies do they employ to secure their sustained vitality? (3) What common problems do they experience?" (P.1) The report is divided into two parts, each part containing six principles which provide the foundation for general education. The sections are: Articulating a Compelling Vision for General Education, and Forming an Evolving Community Based Upon a Vision of General Education. Assessment plays a major role throughout the report.
