U.S. Department of Education Announces $11. 7 Million in Support for Parent Education Resource Centers in 19 States
U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige today announced that nonprofit organizations working with school districts in 19 states will receive a total of $11.7 million to set up local parent information and resource centers in communities across the nation. "If we are to leave no child behind and offer each child a high-quality education, parents must be actively involved in their child's learning," Paige said. "We know that early childhood learning activities can help to close the achievement gap between economically disadvantaged children and their peers. To help all of our children read and learn well these centers can help share this and other valuable information with parents and teachers." States and territories that received new grants to establish centers include Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Guam, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Washington

Public Education
Adult Education: Literacy and Self-Advocacy Skills New Hampshire: Since 1998, The Right Question Project has worked with the New Hampshire Bureau of Adult Education to integrate our educational strategy into their Adult Literacy programs. More than 60 educators are using the RQP method to help their students build skills to advocate for themselves and navigate systems. An adult educator shared this story about the impact of RQP on one of her students:
One of my adult learners (with a fourth grade literacy level) prepared for her meeting at the Employment Office by formulating her own questions, writing them down on cards and then laid the cards down on her kitchen table and prioritized them. Think of what she was doing! She was writing. She was formulating questions. She was organizing written work. She was thinking strategically. All that from being inspired by the Question Formulation Technique.
Nashua, NH: The Nashua Adult Learning Center (ALC) has been particularly successful in using RQP in their Family Empowerment Project. The ALC has shared our method for teaching advocacy skills with staff members, who have then shared it with colleagues and participating families. Many of the families are now interacting more effectively with the programs and services that directly affect them. For example:
Family Empowerment Project participants had questions about how the Division for Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) was conducting their assessments and asked the local DCYF supervisor to meet with them to answer their questions.
