  • National Assessment of Educational Progress
The National Assessment of Educational Progress, operated by the US Department of Education, bills itself as The Nation's Report Card . While not explicitly tied to particular national or state standards, its reports provide a way of looking at student progress across the country in the eight subject areas the NAEP covers. These are the arts, civics, geography, math, reading, science, US history, and writing. Each subject has its own page that contains findings from related assessments, answers to basic questions about assessment, and standards and frameworks links. The NAEP site contains the following results (and the year last administered): the arts (1997), civics (1998), geography (1994; the 2001 results are being analyzed), math (2000), reading (2000), science (1996;the 2000 results are due in the fall of 2001), US history (1994; the 2001 results are being analyzed), and writing (1998).

New Mexico's Land and People
The first observation newcomers make about New Mexico is its vast geographical openness. Whether on winding mountain roads, long stretching highways or out on the wide open plains, the blue skies reach into distant horizons. New Mexico is actually the fifth largest state in the United States with 121,335 square miles New Mexico's geography includes colorful mesas, lava flows, extinct volcano areas, unusual rock formations among cliffs and mountains, and Carlsbad Caverns. New Mexico also has approximately 20 million acres of forested land , 8.5 million of which is designated as National Forest. Ancient seas that once covered the land left behind fossil beds scattered throughout the state. While the climate is generally considered dry because of the low humidity, water fills mountain lakes and streams as the winter snows melt in the spring. Rainfall is most abundant during the summer months of the monsoon season when the billowing masses of cumulus clouds erupt into afternoon showers.

2000 New Mexico Census Data
UNM's Institute for Applied Research Services (IARS) , which consists of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) and the Division of Government Research (DGR) , are working together to make the 2000 United States Census Data for New Mexico more accessible. This joint project (CAAP - Census Aggregation and Accessibility Project) will develop this web page so users can easily obtain the data. The census data sets available below cover the entire state of New Mexico. Data for individual geographic areas of the state (a county, city or town, American Indian area, etc.) can be found on BBER's Census 2000 web page , the New Mexico Resource Geographic Information System (RGIS) web page Electronic America , the Geography Network , or directly from the Census Bureau's web site This web page provides links to geographic and tabular data that have been pieced together and made readily available to both experienced and inexperienced GIS users. Data sets for download are available in standard GIS industry formats as well as some other popular formats. In addition, interactive facilities that allow for the production of quick maps and tables, plus some ready-to-use packaged GIS applications, are provided. Our goal is to make it easy for less experienced and casual users to access either the data sets or the ready-to-use GIS applications for their unique needs. Please note that this is an unfunded public service project. Work is completed when time and staff are available and a considerable time lag is likely from the time the Census Bureau releases data to when they are reformatted and made available here.
