New Mexico Center for the Book Wins $6100 Boorstin Community Service Award
Center for the Book Director John Y. Cole announced today that the New Mexico Center for the Book, one of the national center's 49 state affiliates, has received the first Boorstin "Community Togetherness Award." The award is named for Librarian of Congress Emeritus Daniel J. Boorstin and his wife, Ruth. Boorstin, Librarian of Congress from 1975-1987, established the Center for the Book in 1977. To mark their recent 61st wedding anniversary, the Boorstins gave the national center a gift of $6100 to be presented to a state center that demonstrated unusual success in involving different parts of the community in its reading and literacy promotion programs. "In the spirit of togetherness that we have been so fortunate to share for so many years, Ruth and I want to support creative projects that involve all parts of a community and help bring it together," said Boorstin.

Needs Assessment The New Mexico assessment focused on the status of tribal museums and cultural centers. The state coordinator for the project also serves as the tribal libraries consultant for the New Mexico State Library . Knowledge of the status of tribal libraries within the state has been readily available. Since information related to museums and cultural centers is new information, a detailed needs assessment modeled after the Arizona needs assessment was conducted. Ten tribes operate museums or cultural centers within the state. All ten participated in the assessment. The results of the assessment indicate that tribes seek support and recognition at the tribal level; financial and personnel resources are limited; without staff any new plans or training opportunities are difficult to implement. There is also a lack of information available to them regarding sources of funding or other methods of support. Training needs include how to plan for the development of a museum; how to obtain resources; how to get endorsement and support at the tribal government level. Results of the assessment have been shared with several state agencies in New Mexico as well as with the
