New Mexico Center and Consortium for Nursing Workforce Development
Introduction The Colleagues in Caring: Regional Collaborative for Nursing Workforce Development is a nationally competitive grant program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It is a three-year grant awarded to twenty regions whose purpose is to help nursing schools, hospitals and other nursing institutions initiate workforce development systems. The purpose of the Colleagues in Caring program is to encourage the planning, implementation and long term support of action programs to benefit the emerging health care system. In New Mexico, The Colleagues in Caring initiative addresses the drastic changes in today's health care. These changes have been caused by: prepayment plans and provider organizations, such as HMOs and hospital chains, which have incentives to reduce costs; a lower number of hospital admissions; development of case management; an increased use of outpatient and home care options; advanced technologies; many acute care services placed in outpatient or home settings; and community-based health and preventive care services. The New Mexico project has organized the New Mexico Consortium and Center for Nursing Workforce Development.
