TODAY'S LEAD STORIES...
9 Apr 2003 School Cuts
The Education Department will eliminate the equivalent of almost 2,000 full-time jobs at the end of the school year. The news came a day after the Bloomberg administration announced 3,400 layoffs at other city agencies. Together the cuts would be the largest city layoffs since 1991. The Education Department cuts will affect some 3,200 paraprofessionals, many of them part-time, including teacher aides who work in elementary school classrooms, lunchroom supervisors and hall monitors. The city has already eliminated about 1,000 positions at department headquarters and in the School Construction Authority. Indications are the Education Department will face far more layoffs than any other city agency. The Commuter Tax Debate Governor George Pataki has asked city business leaders not to release a letter urging the reinstatement of a commuter tax, the New York Times reports . The governor asked the Partnership for New York City to give him more time to come up with alternative ways to help the city through its current fiscal crisis. The partnership agreed to hold off on the letter, which also urged the governor not to cut education aid to the city. Aides to the governor did not tell the Times how Pataki planned to help the city, but said the governor remained opposed to any kind of commuter tax.
