The (Collegiate) Reformed Protestant
Dutch Church Of the City of New York
Organized on Manhattan Island
April, 1628
Incorporated as
"The Minister, Elders and Deacons of the Reformed Protestant
Dutch Church of the City of New York"
By Royal Charter May 11, 1696
There was a congregation
before there was a minister, before there was a church. From the time the first settlers had arrived in New Amsterdam, limited religious services conducted by laymen had been held in an empty loft room above the Dutch colony's grist mill, in a location on what is now William Street. With the April 7, 1628 arrival of an ordained minister, Dominie Jonas Michaelius, and the selection of the first Consistory, the Collegiate Church was born in the new world. This 1628 date marks the founding of the oldest Protestant body in America with a continuous history of service. But for the first five years of the Collegiate Church, services continued to be held above the grist mill.
In 1633 the first church ever built in New Amsterdam was constructed to replace the loft services. This church, facing the East River, was a plain wooden building, with a gambrel roof and no spire, on a lane that is now Pearl Street.

New York City churches continue Sept. 11 response Aug. 6, 2002 News media contact: Linda Bloom New York By Linda Bloom* NEW YORK (UMNS) – Nine months after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Cheryl Holt-Andrews asked the children at the after-school program at Tremont United Methodist Church to write – or, if they were under 5, draw – about their feelings of the events of that day. She was horrified that, months later, the children still drew pictures of the World Trade Center’s twin towers under attack by airplanes and engulfed in flames. "That had the most impact on me," she says. "The older children, they can talk about it; these (younger) children have been holding it in all this time." Tremont, in the Bronx, is one of the many United Methodist churches in New York City’s five boroughs that are continuing to respond to people affected by the events of Sept. 11. The denomination’s New York Annual (regional) Conference has allocated $1 million in grants to help fund local church programs. The conference received the money from the United Methodist Committee on Relief’s "Love in the Midst of Tragedy" Sept. 11 fund-raising appeal. The Rev. Charles Straut, Jr., coordinator of the conference’s Sept. 11 disaster response task force, says it makes sense to use UMCOR resources from faithful church members "in places like New York, where street-level ministry is needed now." The conference has been gratified by the financial support from the denomination, he adds.

"The body is a unit though it is made up of many parts… If one part suffers every part suffers with it, if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ and each one of you is a part of it". 1 Corinthians 12: 12, 26-27
We Are The Body of Christ

When one part suffers we all suffer. World Vision wants to help your church serve those who suffer in your congregation and in your community by coming alongside you and enhancing your ability to serve them.
We can support a youth outreach worker at your church, or provide children and families in need with the basic necessities of life.
But the body of Christ is spread throughout the world, and many parts are suffering. World Vision wants to be a bridge to children and families in the poorest countries of the world , that your church may extend Christ's love to them. That they too may know the love of Christ.
Here are some ways we can work together:
  • Prayer
  • Hope Sunday
  • Ministering to the Needs of your Congregation
  • Ministering to the Needs of your Community ...
  • International Programs
    Prayer
Please keep World Vision and the millions of children we serve around the world in your prayers, especially the children orphaned and impacted by AIDS in Africa.

    History
Buffalo, like many other Polonian enclaves at the turn of the 20th century, saw a division in the ranks of the Roman Catholic parishes it founded. An Independent Polish Catholic parish was first established in Buffalo in Aug 1895, when a rejected group of parishioners at St. Adalbert's Parish decided to form a separate church just a block away. These discontented souls were forced to decide their own fate when their demands were rejected by the Bishop and his advisors. The separation was a matter of personalities and parish ownership rather than a matter of faith and doctrine. On land purchased along Sobieski St., the first Mass was celebrated by Rev. Kolaszewski, an invited Independent priest from Cleveland, Ohio for the members of Holy Mother of the Rosary Parish. Two weeks later, the Rev. Antoni Klawitter, the founder of St. Adalbert's Parish returned to Buffalo at the invitation of the Sobieski St. congregation. Although his stay was short, he laid the foundation for the future of the parish. Klawitter was followed by a very colorful and zealous man, Stefan Kaminski, who arrived at the parish from Freeland, PA. For the next 15 years, the history of the parish was full of conflict and growth. That same year, 1896, a synod made up of Independent parishes in the area and elsewhere, elected Kaminski as their Bishop. Under his direction, the magnificent Gothic cathedral of Medina sandstone was erected and pompously dedicated in 1906.
