Geography
Eastern New York is dominated by the Great Appalachian Valley. Lake Champlain is the chief northern feature of the valley, which also includes the Hudson River. The Hudson is noted for its beauty, as are Champlain and neighboring Lake George. West of the lakes are the rugged Adirondack Mts., another major vacationland, with extensive wildernesses and sports centers like Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. Mt. Marcy (5,344 ft/1,629 m), the highest point in the state, is near Lake Placid. The rest of NE New York is hilly, sloping gradually to the valleys of the St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario, both of which separate it from Ontario. The Mohawk River, which flows from Rome into the Hudson north of Albany , is part of the New York State Barge Canal , a major route to the Great Lakes and the midwestern United States as well as the only complete natural route through the Appalachian Mts.

    Geography Awareness Week
November 12-18, 2000, is Geography Awareness Week. Geography Awareness Week is sponsored by the National Geographic Society, as part of their efforts to:
    • promote awareness of the importance of geography education, and
    • demonstrate the breadth of geography, and its relevance to almost any other subject.
This year, the focus of National Geography Week is conservation. Conservation is about balancing some of the needs of people — e.g., for places to live, work, play, go to school — with the need for a planet that will be healthy for years to come. What is the link between conservation and geography? As geography helps us to better understand our planet’s complexity, conservation enables us to become better protectors of its biological and cultural diversity. The National Geographic Society has sponsored Geography Awareness Week for the past 13 years, but this year, for the first time, information and activities are available online, at http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/education/gaw/

    Geography of Tully
The Landscape - At one stage, the edge of the glacier stood at Tully Valley and built up an enormous bank of end moraine, about 600 feet high, across the valley. The moraine's crest now forms a segment of the St. Lawrence-Susquehanna drainage divide. As the torrents of meltwater flowed away south, they spread quantities of gravel and sand that now make up much of the valley floor. It is the most extensive area of glacial outwash in Central New York. Soils - The blanket of ground-up rock which the glaciers spread over the valley sides and uplands contained limestone and other materials that make today's soil more fertile than the pre-glacial soil. The glacial load also included many boulders, some several feet in diameter, derived from ledges many miles to the north and northeast. Although the lowland soils are largely sandy and gravelly, there are occasional areas of clay-rich soil where the meltwater streams formed into ponds, at least temporarily. The upland soils are more silty. Tully Limestone - Limestone, ten feet or more in thickness, crops out along many of the hillsides in the area, with shale rocks both above and beneath it. In 1839 the early geologists named it the Tully Limestone because of the excellent outcrops in the vicinity. Scientifically, Tully Limestone is unique among the New York rocks in that its most distinctive fossil species is not found elsewhere in America.

The New York Times gets an 'F' for geography
Michael Brown, The Electronic Intifada, 18 December 2002
Every six months or so a report comes out detailing the woeful state of geographical knowledge held by many Americans. Usually people chuckle and wonder how it is that so many Americans think California is on the East Coast. After all, every rightly educated American knows it's on the Left Coast.
But the consequences can be serious. This is particularly the case when it is The New York Times (NYT) butchering basic facts about where Israel begins and ends. Of course, as Israel has never defined exactly where those borders are, it is alarming when the NYT appears to be handing over vast swathes of new territory to Israel.
The most commonly misplaced territory in the region is Shebaa Farms, a small patch of land that Israel continues to occupy on the border between Lebanon and the occupied Golan Heights. The news media regularly imply it is Israeli. The one thing we know is that the area is either Syrian or Lebanese, but most certainly not Israeli. Israeli-occupied yes, but not Israeli.

And Other School 14 Curriculum Resources Because Troy is located in the Capital Region of New York, teachers at School 14 find it important that the children know and understand the history and geography of the state: we've accommodated their classroom needs with several relevant links. Hiking these Adirondack trails will give you an even broader view of what's out there on the Web, with examples not only for School 14's New York State history and geography curriculum, but for their general science curriculum as well, from ecology to botany to the life cycle of the butterfly. Visit these sites with a discriminating eye, trekkers. Articulate some of the questions that may already be forming in your head: Is this site for students or teachers? Or both? Or neither? How can it be used in the classroom? Is it of no use at all? Could most of the information found at the site be found in the school library? These are tough questions, but you really need to confront them before you bring the Internet in your classroom.

East on I-80, then northeast on I-81 to I-84, I-84 to I-87, and finally I-87 north to our first stop, northwest of Kingston. Our first stop provided an expansive view (weather-permitting) to the east across the Hudson River Valley. Here we introduced the main themes of the trip and began discussing the significance of the Devonian sedimentary rocks preserved in the Catskill Mountains. At the next stop(s), we examined the oldest sedimentary rocks in the area and began interpreting the paleo-environments they represent. DAY 3: Fri., Sept. 20th - CATSKILL MOUNTAINS
We rose early, drove east across the Tappen Zee Bridge to Tarrytown where we boarded a commuter train to Grand Central Station in Manhattan. In Manhattan, we boarded an uptown subway to east 77th Street, walked across Central Park and examined glacially polished outcrops of ca. 1.1 Ga deformed supracrustal rocks cut by granite and pegmatite dikes. We emerged from the Park near west 81st and the American Museum of Natural History where we checked out the world-class exhibit on Phanerozoic fossils. After a couple hours in the Museum we traveled to southern Manhattan and to the space formerly occupied by the twin towers of the World Trade Center where we discussed the mechanics of their collapse. After a quick dinner we headed back to Grand Central, boarded a train back to Tarrytown, and began the long drive back to Granville.
