In response to Lit in Trouble (June 28, 1979) To the Editors I have no quarrel with Mr. Ehrenpreis's opinions on Celestial Pantomime NYR Mr. Ehrenpreis delights in the power of positivist thinking, as did his colleague, E.D. Hirsch, when savaging Frank Kermode in the previous issue of NYR . Perhaps we have here a new school of criticism in Charlottesville, a new return to the village, and our American positivists are by their great guff cosmographers grown. Certainly, then, we should have the parting of names: we already have the Chicago Aristotelians, the New Haven Mafia, and now Messrs. Hirsch and Ehrenpreis from the Commonwealth of the virgin spleen. They want a name, an uncommon want. I oblige. The original European Positivismusstreit The Virginia Hams Justus George Lawler Geneva, Illinois Notes No connection with the Geneva School of critics.

New York City is situated on the north eastern coast of the United States and is divided into 5 boroughs - Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island.
With a population exceeding 7 million, NYC is the largest city in the U.S., although less than a quarter of it's residents live in the more exclusive borough of Manhattan.
Manhattan is an island located on it's own, mainly granite, land mass bordered on the west by the Hudson River and on the east by the East and Harlem Rivers.
The street layout is based on a grid system date back to the early 19th century, with Fifth Avenue being the backbone of Manhattan, thereby dividing the East (York to Fifth Avenue) and the West Sides (Fifth to Twelfth Avenue). The streets run east to west starting at 1st Street in the Village and ending at 220 street in the north.
To simplify the many areas of Manhattan, working from south to north; Downtown (including the Financial District), the Village (Greenwich, East and West), Mid Town, Upper East and West Sides and the Harlem.

    • National Assessment of Educational Progress
The National Assessment of Educational Progress, operated by the US Department of Education, bills itself as The Nation's Report Card . While not explicitly tied to particular national or state standards, its reports provide a way of looking at student progress across the country in the eight subject areas the NAEP covers. These are the arts, civics, geography, math, reading, science, US history, and writing. Each subject has its own page that contains findings from related assessments, answers to basic questions about assessment, and standards and frameworks links. The NAEP site contains the following results (and the year last administered): the arts (1997), civics (1998), geography (1994; the 2001 results are being analyzed), math (2000), reading (2000), science (1996;the 2000 results are due in the fall of 2001), US history (1994; the 2001 results are being analyzed), and writing (1998).
