Overcoming Adversity ... Participating K-12 Schools Knowledge about others breeds a world of understanding, a spirit of tolerance, and a future of hope. Paul S. Wichansky presents a very personal and uplifting story that will help students develop a deep respect for those who have disabilities. Students will become educated not only on people with disabilities, but also educated on life's perceptions and possibilities. Here are my most memorable moments. Enjoy! "Our Future President."
Those are the exact words I said to Bill Bradley to get him to smile! In this event, Bill Bradley awarded me the 1988 Young Citizenship Award for my active involvement in community service. This photograph was taken during a reception at Brower Commons on the Rutgers University campus in New Brunswick. Notice how Senator Bradley towers over me! Of course, he is a former basketball star, but I have more headroom in cars. Bond. James Bond.
Never say never again! After I deliver my awareness program to United Nations representatives at their Special Session on Children, I am delighted at the opportunity to meet actor Roger Moore. Roger commends me on my continuing journey to educate children about disabilities. I was attending a New York City event where Roger Moore and Harry Belafonte were unveiling a statue in honor of Audrey Hepburn's lifetime contribution to UNICEF. Jumping from a plane!
In my skydiving experience, I give a twin thumbs-up for the camera at 120 mph. At this moment, I am in a free-fall at over two miles above southern N.J. With me is seasoned skydiving instructor Jason Gonzalas. On the western horizon is the city of Philadelphia; on the eastern horizon, Atlantic City! You can see both towns from this height!

The Safe Schools Against Violence in Education Act (Project SAVE) was signed into law in July 2000, culminating NYSUT's efforts over the past five years to improve school safety in response to the rise of violence in our schools. This legislation affords teachers and other school personnel greater opportunities to be involved in the development of school district policies and procedures concerning safe schools. Following is a summary of the major provisions of this legislation. Highlights of Project SAVE
    • Penalties for assaults by any individual on a teacher or school employee or by any non-student on a student are raised from a misdemeanor to a Class D felony.

UFT Teacher Centers: 120 Strong and Growing

Teacher Centers have become the heart of many successful efforts to rejuvenate low-performing schools. Collectively, they make up a union-run professional development program that dwarfs many universities in size and scope. This article ran in the February edition of AFT's American Teacher
The teacher center at PS 165 in upper Manhattan is a crowded but welcoming place. In addition to the 15 computers-somehow strategically arranged so they can all be used at the same time-the telephone, the copying machine, the TV and VCR, the laminator, the coffee machine and other equipment, there are racks of books, papers, videos and all the other resources that can make life in the classroom easier for teachers and paraprofessionals. Similar rooms can be found in some 120 schools and other sites throughout New York City, with new centers opening regularly. Individually, they have become the heart of many successful efforts to rejuvenate a low-performing school; collectively, they make up a union-run professional development program that dwarfs many universities in size and scope. The UFT/New York City Teacher Centers Consortium, as it's known, has been around for 17 years. Part of a network of centers supported by the New York State Education Department, the New York City consortium is a partnership of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) and the New York City public schools as well as the state education department. But the UFT and its 140-strong teacher center staff are clearly the guiding force.

There are 57 Liberty Partnerships Programs serving over 14,000 students living in urban, rural and suburban communities. How Effective Are We?
    • Liberty Partnerships Programs are included in the academic intervention strategies of partner schools
Our annual dropout rate is under 2 percent On average, we send approximately 1,500 high school graduates to postsecondary education institutions each year
Through relationships with partners, Liberty Partnerships Programs at the state and local levels have been able to leverage expanded resources for students and partner schools.
