1. The Value of Maps
Maps are perhaps as fundamental to society as language and the written word. They are the preeminent means of recording and communicating information about the location and spatial characteristics of the natural world and of society and culture. Some would say that the use of maps distinguishes geography from all other disciplines. The truth is that maps, though of special concern to geographers, are used throughout the sciences and humanities and in virtually every aspect of day-to-day life. Millions of maps are produced and used annually throughout the world by scientists, scholars, governments, and businesses to meet environmental, economic, political, and social needs. Many cartographers have reflected on the important role played by maps in society. One of the most recent statements worth considering is Denis Wood's book The Power of Maps (New York: Guilford Press, 1992).

One of the earliest available views of New York City, depicting a church, signal tower and windmill. The view closely resembles item B-1, a sketch dated 1642-43, in Stokes and Haskell's "American Historical Prints Early Views of American Cities, Etc." [Item no. 2231.] $1,000.00 (Gentleman's Magazine.) Plan of Fort Frederick at Crown Point [on sheet with] Untitled map of Lake George/Lake Champlain area.] 1755. The top half of this page from the November, 1755 issue of the Gentleman's Magazine is a plan of Fort Frederick at Crown Point. The lower right quarter of the page is devoted to a crude map of the area surrounding Lake George which has an A-H key identifying Lake George, the Hudson River, Lake Champlain, Fort Anne, Fort Nicholson, etc. The balance of the page presents a military description of the area to give the reader insight into "the country where the late engagement happened." 39. GENEALOGICAL GEOGRAPHY

http://www.sals.edu/geography.htm
GENEALOGICAL GEOGRAPHY
GENEALOGICAL SITE-SEEING
This bibliography was supported by Federal Library Services and Technology Act funds awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services Because searching in the right place is key for finding the primary documents needed to verify census entries, vital records, immigration and even military service, it's important that genealogists research the existence of a locality for the relevant time period. Many town, counties, cities and even countries have experienced numerous name changes over the years which can make pinpointing the place of an ancestral connection like hitting a moving target. For example, the place one family lived for the entire19th century was at various times part of seven different counties. Recommended print source (both for census and local variations): Map Guide to the U.S. Federal Censuses; 1790-1920 by William Thorndale and William Dollarhide [2002 reprint, $40] which ". . . shows all U.S. county boundaries from 1790 to 1920. On each of the nearly 400 maps the old county lines are superimposed over the modern ones to highlight the boundary changes at ten-year intervals. Also included are (1) a history of census growth; (2) the technical facts about each census; (3) a discussion of census accuracy; (4) an essay on available sources for each state's old county lines; and (5) a statement with each map indicating which county census lines exist and which are lost. Then there is an index listing all present-day counties, plus nearly all defunct counties or counties later re-named." Only caveat I can see is that the intervals are 10 years and changes back and forth could have occurred in that window unrecorded.
