CLIENT STORY: Regional Plan Association (New York)
H20 Region Mapping (Highlands to Ocean) GENERAL GreenInfo Network was asked by the Regional Plan Association (RPA) of New York, the Highlands Coalition and a group of funders to create a series of GIS maps for the Highlands to Ocean (H20) region around New York. This huge area covers parts of four states and is home to over 20 million people. Two primary projects were conducted. H20 Watershed Mapping Cartography by Ezra Freeman and Louis Jaffe; final art for offset created by Louis Jaffe, based on design from Green Team Advertising of New York. Highlands Area Working with the New-York based Highlands Coalition, GreenInfo Network set out to create an attractive, display quality map that demonstrated the unity of the Highlands region. This map locates the highlands region within the context of the East Coast and the Appalachian mountains, and demonstrates land use within the region. The balance between urbanized land and public and protected lands is highlighted, as is the drinking water connection between the lakes and reservoirs of the Highlands Region and the densely urbanized along its border. This mountainous area is linked more by geography than political boundaries. Because the region includes portions of four states, data had to be collected from a variety of sources and combined into a seamless display. Cartography by Ezra Freeman.

••• The New Geography Reaches Critical Mass
Maps and Chaps
by Jeff Byles August 1 - 7, 2001 (Illustration by Charlene Potts) s a young lad in Gillingham, England, the critical geographer David Harvey often tried to run away from home. His conscience always got the best of him, though. "So I decided to run away in my imagination," he reminisced last year, and took to roaming the perforated vistas of his stamp collection, where countries were safely imprinted with the British monarch. Growing older, Harvey dreamed of sailing on the naval destroyers he toured with his father, a Chatham shipyard foreman. He limned maps of the empire and, as teenage wanderlust set in, cycled the Kent countryside. If empire only knew what it had wrought. A world away and a lifetime later, Harvey is one of our keenest combatants for social justice in globalizing urban spaces. And though he'll always have "a couple of toes firmly stuck" in the Gillingham mud, the once peripatetic youth has now planted his other foot at an auspicious address for the study of space and place.

Unit Plan for The Geography of Our Community Curriculum Unit Plan Social Studies Second Grade The Local Community Unit 2: The Geography of Our Community Abstract This unit introduces the concept of local community. It begins with a review of prior knowledge of family, school, and neighborhood and proceeds with an exploration of what makes a community. Children explore the major function of a community, which is to help people meet their basic needs. A variety of children's books and photographs are used to help children discover similarities and differences among communities and to build a working definition of "local community." The unit concludes with activities that help children begin to focus on their own local community, emphasizing the township, village, or city in which they live. Unit Title: The Geography of Our Community Grade Level/Course Title: Second Grade /The Local Community Focus Questions:
  • Where is our local community? How can our local community be described? What is the interaction between people and the natural environment in our local community?

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program in Geographic Information Science (GIS) PURPOSES AND GOALS OF THE PROGRAM Revolutionary changes are occurring in the process of map-making and the analysis of spatial information. Advances in computer technology make it possible to store vast amounts of information about the earth in digital form, to overlay that information based on geographical location, and to create high-quality maps with the click of a mouse. Databases are available that depict natural features and human landscapes for almost any area of the globe, at multiple scales. New computer mapping technologies are being used for a wide range of applications - from bond rating to commercial fishing to cancer mapping to air pollution modeling. Fueling the revolution in computer mapping is the development of geographic information systems , computerized systems for mapping, analyzing and managing geographic data. Geographic data include any information that is tied to a location on the earth’s surface – the locations of hospitals, subway networks, rivers and smokestacks are all examples of geographic data. Geographic information systems allow analysts to link and overlay these diverse types of data, explore associations, visualize patterns, and prepare finished maps. In order to use these systems effectively, analysts must have a firm grounding in

    Decennial Census Information
    Census Geography/Maps/GIS
Census geography has changed over the years, as populations grow, decline, and move. Terminology has also changed from census to census. All census data is not available at every geographical level. In general, the more specific the geographic level, the less data is available.
This section includes any publications, datasets, or websites which provide information about decennial census geography or geospatial issues in general. The web pages for each individual census provides information about maps and GIS products which relate to that specific census.
