During the latter half of the 19th century, geography continued to be included in American schools as a separate subject. It was taught in elementary as well as secondary schools. Illustrations and maps became more detailed and color was added to many books. Content during this period is highly reflective of the times in which they were published, presenting a variety of biases and topics acceptable to the American audience. Atlases and gazetteers, some general (such as the World Atlas) and some specific (such as the Biblical Gazetteer) appear to have developed along with maps and geography textbooks.
Terra Incognita
The interior of Africa continued to be a mysterious or "dark" place to the Western world until the early 20th century. European colonial powers frequently discouraged geographers with tales of cannibalism, impassable deserts, dense jungles, and ferocious animals. By doing so, they protected their imperialist goals within the continent. In these three maps, all published within 26 years of each other, many of the features of Africa were unknown to American geographers. Note the similarities of the two maps published in the 1870s, but also note the improvements in the map published in Frye's 1896 textbook.

I n collecting cartographic materials relating to the events of 9/11, the Library's Geography and Map Division is concentrating on documenting the role maps played in managing the recovery effort. Traditional surveying and mapping techniques as well as modern electronic and remote sensing technologies were employed to aid the rescue and recovery operations, including remote sensing and aerial imagery, digital orthophotography, cutting-edge laser (light detection and rangingLIDAR) technology with the capability of producing accurate elevation data, and thermal imagery for mapping hot spots in the rubble. T hese mapping initiatives directed at the federal, state, and municipal levelssometimes in association with the private-sectorprovided important geographic and cartographic resources to help officials evaluate damage, monitor the progress of recovery, and provide for the safe deployment of personnel.

New York City Maps
The New York City area is quite diverse and changing rapidly. To analyze and map these trends, Professor Andrew A. Beveridge and several of his students have created maps and carried out analyses using a Geographical Information System (ATLAS/GIS) combined with conventional statistical methods. The maps presented here are samples of some of that work. Look at detailed map. According to the 1990 Census, New York City now has a minority of non-Hispanic Whites. Other groups such as Asians, Hispanics and Blacks have grown rapidly for the last two decades. The first map shows the growth of the black population from 1970 to 1990. It is based upon Public Use Micro Sample Areas (PUMA) from 1990. Interestingly, the area in the northern part of Manhattan known as Harlem shows a decline in blacks. Growth areas are the Northern Bronx, Brooklyn around Bedford-Stuyvesant, and within certain sections of Queens. Look at detailed map. As the previous map shows, such population shifts directly impact politics in New York. It compares Lindsay's 1969 race with that of Dinkins/Giuliani in 1993 (and 1989). Dinkins lost ground to Lindsay in large sections of Manhattan, Forest Hills in Queens, and in parts of Staten Island. He gained ground, however, in Harlem, Brooklyn, and parts of Queens and the Bronx. Those areas, as the first map illustrated, became much more heavily African-American during the decades of the 1970's and 1980's, while the other areas stayed predominantly white.

Physical Map Introduction [Top of Page] The Dutch were the first settlers in New York, establishing Fort Orange near Albany in 1624 and New Amsterdam on the island of Manhattan a year later. After the English took over in the 1660s, the colony was renamed New York, after the Duke of York. One of the original 13 states to join the Union (it entered in 1788), New York is known as the "Empire State." The state includes everything from skyscrapers in Manhattan to rivers, mountains, and lakes in upstate New York. Today, New York has the second highest population in the nation (after California), and remains the financial center of the country. The state flower is the rose, and the capital is Albany. Background Information
Geography is much more than mapping the locations of places and features of the landscape such as mountains, rivers, and deserts. Geography encompasses the study of the physical features of the earth and human interactions with them. The focus of physical geography is the natural history of the earth including topics such as climatology, hydrology, meteorology, and remote sensing; that of human geography is the interactions of people with their environment including urban studies, tourism, agriculture, trade, and population.
