Department of Health Commissioner Novello Lauds National Health and Nutrition Survey Aimed at Promoting Healthy Lifestyles
Commissioner Novello Urges New Yorkers to Participate in Six-Week Study ALBANY, June 13, 2001 - State Health Commissioner Antonia C. Novello, M.D., M.P.H., Dr.P.H. today lauded one of the nation's most comprehensive health and nutrition studies as an important initiative that will help strengthen access to primary and preventive health care for all New Yorkers. Dr. Novello said that the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which is conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will provide important information to help states target public health prevention strategies. "The CDC's national health and nutrition study provides critical health-related information on a number of issues such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, among others and will be used by health care professionals to ensure that the health-related needs of New Yorkers, and Americans as a whole, are being appropriately addressed," Commissioner Novello said. "I urge all New Yorkers chosen for this national study to voluntarily participate. You are doing New York and the nation a great service." "Governor Pataki is committed to improving the health and well being of New Yorkers and the results of this survey will hopefully do just that," said Kenneth J. Ringler, Jr., Commissioner of the New York State Office of General Services (OGS). "Through Governor Pataki's direction and leadership, OGS is pleased to be able provide space at the Harriman State Campus that is convenient for the participants and equipped to accommodate the needs of the mobile examination center. We are proud to help play a role in making this project a success."

The Role of Dietary Fiber in Childhood American Health Foundation in Valhalla, New York, Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at New York Medical College, and Director of the Graduate Program of Maternal and Child Health at New York Medical College. The intake level of dietary fiber for children in the United States, as measured in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey ( NHANES II ; 1976 to 1980), for children ages 4-19 years was estimated at 12 grams per day or 6 grams per 1000 kcal. Of this, 1/3 comes from snacks and 13% from breakfast. These values fall short of the current recommendations for fiber intake and may be inadequate for optimal health promotion and disease prevention. While at the American Health Foundation (AHF) American Academy of Pediatrics Dr. Williams recommends that dietary fiber intake should be increased gradually by increasing consumption of an assortment of fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, legumes, cereals, and other grain products (which provide a mixture of both soluble and insoluble fiber), along with a concomitant increase in water consumption. Since dietary fiber increases water retention in the colon, resulting in bulkier, softer stools, recommendations for water/fluid intake should be increased commensurate with increases in dietary fiber. About 6-8 cups/d of water are needed for children to produce soft bulky stools.

About the New York Junior League
Mission of The New York Junior League The New York Junior League is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. The New York Junior League reaches out to women of all races, religions, and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to volunteerism. No woman shall be excluded from membership because of race, religion, national origin or disability. About The New York Junior League Cultural Enrichment of Youth Focus Area Research shows that exposure to art and music facilitates social and communicative development in children. Despite that, the economic realities faced by public schools are increasingly causing funding for art and music education to be dropped. To help bring arts education and appreciation to underserved New York children and teenagers, NYJL volunteers participate in a variety of hands-on, interactive projects designed to encourage self-expression while building confidence and self-esteem. Click here for more information on Cultural Enrichment of Youth Focus Area Domestic Violence Focus Area Domestic violence is a problem that knows no demographic or economic boundaries. Its victims often feel as if they have nowhere to turn and are unable to break the cycle on their own. NYJL volunteers address the unique concerns of women and children in abusive situations through programs emphasizing empowerment. NYJL Domestic Violence programs are coordinated with established community partners and focus on life skills training; support and emergency services; and providing the tools and resources to help victims break the cycle of domestic violence before it is too late.

Mission: LYFE provides comprehensive services to meet the needs of teenage parents who wish to stay in school or resume their education. Its mission also includes providing a school-based child care program for the babies of these teenage parents that is based on an understanding of child development and accepted best practices of infant and toddler development. Profile: LYFE is a school-based program that has been in existence since 1982. It uses a multidisciplinary case management model that accesses a variety of services to benefit young parents. Located in 41 sites in city schools, the program assists approximately 700 to 1,000 parenting female teens and 50 teen fathers annually. It serves African-American (70 percent), Hispanic (24 percent), white (5 percent), and Asian (1 percent) populations from 12 to 21 years old. On-site child care is provided. Description of Service Model: Through an initiative of the City Council, the LYFE program provides services for teen parents who are enrolled in regular or alternative high schools or who are preparing for the GED exam. While these young parents attend class, LYFE provides developmentally appropriate child care for their children (from 2 months to 3 years of age) in schools or school sites throughout the five boroughs. Each center provides care for 10 to 40 infants and toddlers. Licensed early childhood teachers and specially trained caregivers provide a nurturing, caring environment for each child. In addition to their academic program, student parents are encouraged to take a credit-bearing parenting class covering topics such as nutrition, health care, child development, and short and long range planning. Teen fathers are encouraged to participate, and support groups and counseling are provided by social work staff.

Note: Clients with injuries or in special population groups are required to supply their trainer with a written physician's clearance. Personal trainers are not doctors and (in most cases) are not physical therapists. Therefore it is necessary for your trainer to coordinate your training and nutritional program with your doctor, physiatrist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, chiropractor, special nutritional counselor, and/or alternative medicine healthcare provider(s). Weight Loss and Body Fat Reduction We prefer you to think in terms of "fat loss" instead of "weight loss." The aim of getting in shape is how you look and how healthy you are. The goal should be to get leaner. This means changing your body composition so that you have less fat and more muscle. Since muscle weighs more than fat per cubic measurement, absolute weight loss should not be the sole measure of your success. The important results should be how your body looks, how your clothes fit and how you feel. A visible six pack of abs is only accomplished by both building the abdominal muscles and shedding the fat that covers them up.
