educates public high school students on how to resolve conflict due to hate, intolerance, and other destructive feelings and actions; challenges student leaders to think critically about promoting tolerance within their schools, and increasing support for a violence-free school community; effects positive, meaningful, and measurable change in student attitudes about violence and diversity; provides resources to student victims of abuse by other students, and offers schools tools and resources to assist in handling–safely and constructively–potentially volatile situations that threaten the security and well-being of school staff and students.
On a daily basis, high school students deal with issues and problems that impede their educational and social development, and sometimes threaten their lives. Too often, high school students are confronted by other students wishing to harm or frighten them. When students are not prepared to handle these problems, the consequences can be devastating for all concerned the victim, the aggressor, other students, school staff, families and the community-at-large.
Over the past several years, there have been far too many incidents of violence in schools across this country. Many incidents were spawned by feelings of hate, alienation and intolerance of students toward other students. The prevalence of relationship violence, harassment and discrimination, fights, gangs and weapons, both inside and outside of schools, is alarming. In response to this problem, New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer created the Students Against Violence Initiative to promote school safety, tolerance and respect.

OUR MISSION Carnegie Corporation of New York was created by Andrew Carnegie in 1911 to promote "the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding." Under Carnegie's will, grants must benefit the people of the United States, although up to 7.4 percent of the funds may be used for the same purpose in countries that are or have been members of the British Commonwealth, with a current emphasis on Commonwealth Africa. As a grantmaking foundation, the Corporation seeks to carry out Carnegie's vision of philanthropy, which he said should aim "to do real and permanent good in this world." OUR WORK The program areas that are now the focus of the Corporation's work have evolved over time, adapting to changing circumstances as Andrew Carnegie wished. While current program directions have been designed to correspond with the Corporation's historic mission and legacy and to maintain the continuity of its work, they are also intended to serve as catalysts for change.

While it is unfortunate that President Bush did not achieve the peaceful disarmament of Saddam Hussein through diplomatic means and that Saddam Hussein did not heed President Bush’s call to step down, it is critical at this time for all Americans to unite in support of our military forces.
At this moment, nearly 250,000 American patriots are in the Gulf region, including a member of my family and my staff, waging a fierce battle against Iraq’s brutal dictator and ready to sacrifice their lives on behalf of our great nation. My full support, thoughts, and prayers are with these brave men and women, as well as their families. I join my fellow New Yorkers, and other proud Americans, in hoping for a swift and decisive resolution to this war, with a special prayer for the minimum loss of life."
