pp. 11 - 44 The pervasive influence of American Jews in Hollywood, and upon film content, is one of the historical truisms of our age. Indeed, during the 1930s call for movie censorship were sometimes inseparable from antisemitic attacks upon "Jewish Hollywood." Felicia Herman goes beyond the myths to examine the actual influence of prominent rabbis and Jewish communal leaders in the movement to "reform" the content and message of films during the so-called Golden Age of Hollywood. Herman's analysis provides a valuable case study into how American Jewry coped with a major domestic issue at a time of rising antisemitism. The Sept 12 Initiative:
Students Write for a Better World
What Is the Sept 12 Initiative?
The Sept 12 Initiative is a grassroots movement addressing the causes and consequences of the attacks of September 11. It developed from a conviction that action by young people, including their written words captured in books, will inspire and amplify the desire for peace across the globe and lead to a better world. In its first 60 days, the Sept 12 Initiative has attracted thousands of students, teachers, and principals, spawned a nonprofit guild, and established alliances with several partners of Friendship Through Education, including ePals Classroom Exchange, People to People, Sister Cities International affiliate Sister Schools of San Diego, and a number of other institutions and associations of educators.
What Is the International Student Writers Guild?
The International Student Writers Guild is a program of the nonprofit Greater American Student Writers Guild that unites more than 4 million students and their teachers worldwide in 191 countries. Through the Guild's on-line partner, ePals Classroom Exchange, students around the globe benefit from intercultural, peer-to-peer connections that in turn contribute to international, multilingual, and collaborative projects. The Guild is dedicated to empowering its students by publishing real paperback books using the print-on-demand technology offered by Education World's Educators Publishing Center that stem from the students' exchanges.
