NEW ZEALAND PARROTS Part I
Their Present Status and Distribution
by Martin Fingland ©
The New Zealand region contains a small but unique group of parrots that through a long period of isolation have developed specialised habits. This group have suffered greatly as a result of pressures brought about by the country's relatively recent human occupation - firstly Polynesians, followed by Europeans. Due to the destruction and modification of habitats and the introduction of predators and competitors, the parrots along with many other endemic New Zealand species, have disappeared from much of their former range. These species are now found in much reduced numbers or survive only as relict colonies in isolated areas such as small, predator-free islands. Few articles have been written concerning N.Z. parrots in Parrot Society of Australia News in the past, it therefore appears timely to relate the present situation, with the aim to increase awareness and appreciation for what are some of the most distinctive, specialised and, sadly, rarest parrots in the world. There are six native New Zealand parrot species , these being the Kakapo Kea Kaka Antipodes Island Parakeet ... Red-crowned Kakariki and Yellow-crowned Kakariki . The Kakariki species involve six N.Z. sub-species and a further four sub-species found outside the region, of which two are extinct. As there are only a few

New Zealand so far has been very hassle-free. This hostel is packed with lots of great features (bars, café, movie rooms, TV rooms etc., although the rooms are a bit sterile and the lift appears to be very close to death trap classification. I left the Pink House hostel in Sydney at 4am to get the bus to the airport. Tonight will hopefully be the first decent night's sleep I've gotten since Melbourne. My room was pretty dodgy last night. Beer cans everywhere, as well as two poms who smoked joints back-to-back while they exchanged stories about taking various illegal substances they'd taken around King's Cross. Generally, the mood of the room was caught permanently in that moment in the early morning when the pot has run out, and everyone's coming down. Paranoia, antisocial and eerily quiet between the odd trivial remarks. Understandably I didn't spend a lot of time in there. The movie room was a very good alternative - warm, friendly and of course entertaining. The Dutch couple whose dorm I stayed in previously were in there, as well as some girls from Newcastle who thoughtfully let me inside the hostel very red-eyed at 7am. They'd been in Sydney a few weeks, previously through China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Asked them a lot of questions about Vietnam and Cambodia and got some good information off them. They had apparently no hassles at all up there which is encouraging to hear, as I'd like to go up there at some point.

GEOGRAPHY
STOCK EXCHANGE CLIMATE TIME ZONE ... RECREATION New Zealand is a unique country. Its scenery sets it apart from the rest of the world while its people have a reputation for friendliness, strength and independence. There is abundant beauty and diversity in scenery, lifestyle and culture. From rolling green farmlands to barren volcanic desert areas, from golden beaches with clear blue water to majestic snow covered mountains, New Zealand offers a sample of every possible landscape within a relatively small country.
GEOGRAPHY
New Zealand is situated in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. With two main islands - North and South Island - and other outlying islands, New Zealand encompasses an area comparable in size to Great Britain and Japan, but with a population of only 3.8 million it is one of the world's least crowded countries. The capital city, Wellington (population approximately 400,000) , and New Zealand's largest city, Auckland (population approximately 1,000,000) , are both situated in the North Island. Life in these two cities offers the convenient luxury of being both five minutes from beautiful beaches and just three hours from the mountain ski-fields. In fact, anywhere in New Zealand you are never more than two - three hours from the sandy beaches or rugged coastline. There are many lakes and rivers throughout the country and we make the most of these by enjoying leisure and action activities from fly fishing to jet boating. Other major cities and towns are Auckland, Hamilton (population 120,000), Palmerston North (population approximately 75,000), Christchurch (population approximately 400,000) and Dunedin (population approximately 110,000).

Healesville Sanctuary, Australia
This "zoo" is exclusively of Australian fauna only, set in a large area of native bushland . There are many displays throughout the day telling visitors more of the finer points of the inhabitants. The enclosures are very roomy, with several walk through enclosures. There is a main pathway with smaller paths running off this which leads to the animals. There is a cafeteria on site. Healesville is located about 120 kilometres from Melbourne. Last visited: 1998 Submitted by Nigel Foster nigelwfoster@hotmail.com Just browsing through your review pages, I was surprised by Nigel Foster's under-appreciation of Healesville Sanctuary, Victoria, Australia. To say that Melbourne has pretty much everything that Healesville would have is very misleading. To be sure, nearly every Australian collection these days has a large section on Australian animals, and Melbourne has upped this in recent years (I've been three times since 1992, most recently late last year) but Healesville not only specialises in Australian animals but in endangered Victorian animals such as Leadbetter's Possum, Helmeted Honey-eater, Superb Lyrebird and, of course, the Platypus where they were the first to breed it (and had twins in 1999!). Yes, Melbourne is excellent and getting better. When its master plan is complete it will compete with the best in the world. Already, I think the gorilla exhibit is the best I have seen, and that includes San Diego. But Healesville Sanctuary to me is the complete zoo, the only one I have ever visited where the visitor can actually see the three aims of zoos in practice; conservation with their breeding of endangered species, research - for example into the causes of bush die back and education with their excellent educational centre.

cryonics life-extension room parties. Weeks earlier I had made many e-mail arrangements with cryonicists for meeting including a gathering of Australian cryonicists at my room parties. Dealing with the organizers of AussieCon was difficult. Charles Taylor, who was in programming, was the only person who ever responded to any of my e-mail messages of all the people I tried to contact from e-mail addresses on the AussieCon website. After several exchanges I got Charles to put me on the Nanotechnology panel and to create a Y2K panel, of which I would be moderator. The Y2K panel took some arguing, but I convinced him that speculating about events in 100 days is similar to speculating about events in 100 years. (For my essays on the Y2K computer bug see the Computer section of my website.) It was Charlie who finally informed me that room parties were not allowed in the hotel where the events were being held and this was only after the hotel allowing parties was fully booked. It was not possible to contact the hotel directly since a booking agency was being used. Most of those at the booking agency were not very helpful either, but I finally found one helpful woman who put me on a waiting list. When she let me know of an available room from a cancellation, I took the room and sent her a personal money order for Aus$50 as a token of my appreciation. September 1st, 1999 disappeared from my life when I flew across the International Date Line (although I had a 40-hour September 12th on my return which could have been 43-hours had I not flown from Los Angeles to Toronto). In Melbourne, I shared the hotel room with Keith Lynch, who had also been my WorldCon roommate at Winnipeg, Glasgow & Los Angeles. Despite archiving CryoNet, receiving a Transport Training from Mike Darwin and more recently being President of the Life Extension Society in the Washington, DC area, Keith has still not signed-up with any cryonics organization and remains a "fellow traveler".

Winnipeg, MB, CA Canada
Canadian photographer Shari Hatt brings her most recent work to Plug In ICA next month, continuing her investigations of photographic tradition and pop culture. Well-known in Montreal and Las Vegas for her offbeat Elvis Museum, Hatt has turned her lens on another much-loved performer Liberace. The exhibition pairs documentation from the rhinestoned pianist‚s museum with her most popular series ever, Dogs. Both series constitute a smart reinvention of celebrity, with Hatt‚s trademark attention to the details of our favourite social obsessions. Liberace's Closet, all-new work created with the cooperation of the world-famous Liberace Museum in Las Vegas, provides an intimate glimpse of the star's stunning collection of costumes. A gifted working-class artist who reinvented himself as an object of adoration for millions of fans, Liberace set the bar for conspicuous consumption, equating success with excess but never without a sense of generosity. Hatt's portraits muse on Liberace‚s gender-fluidity - his appeal to the middle-aged ladies he resembled veiled his private homosexuality. The glittering façade of this showbiz legend challenges our continued fascination with the private lives of the very famous. Shari Hatt is a photo-based artist from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her iconographic sources extend from the art historical to popular culture. Hatt has exhibited her work in Canada and the U.S. since 1993. She is the current recipient of the Duke and Duchess of York Photography Prize. The Art Bank, Museum London, The Cygnet Foundation and the Banff Centre for the Arts have recently acquired work from the Dogs series for their collections.

Ned Kelly, dinosaurs, and Phar Lap's heart will soon be in classrooms across the country. Discovernet, the Australian Museums Online (AMOL) education gateway is increasing student and teacher access to collections and stories told by Australian cultural institutions. Launching the gateway today at Leongatha Primary School in Gippsland, Federal Minister for the Arts, Peter McGauran welcomed the new website as an important resource. 'Students can now visit more than 1200 museums, galleries, libraries, zoos and botanic gardens across the country, through their school computers,' Mr McGauran said. 'Discovernet provides a number of web-based educational resources, and allows students to be a museum curator for the day, by assembling their own virtual exhibitions.' Coinciding with the launch, a link has been set up with a megafauna fossil dig site at Alcoota in the Simpson Desert, north-east of Alice Springs. Scientists from the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory have posted photos and diary entries from the dig on the website and this week have been answering emailed questions.

Did you know? Twenty-four fascinating facts about guide dogs
10 March 2003
Not just an ordinary dog! Ever thought about how the Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind's (RNZFB) Guide Dog Services takes what looks like an ordinary puppy and turns it into a hard-working, responsive guide dog for a blind or vision-impaired New Zealander?
Well, it takes loads of genetic research, selection, experience, training and assessment to produce the puppies that will eventually qualify as guide dogs.
The RNZFB relies completely on public donations to raise the $22,500 it needs to produce each guide dog and this month the RNZFB is appealing for the public's help to turn its puppies into fully-trained guide dogs.
Creating a guide dog starts with research and a scientific approach before the breeding stock even get within a sniff of each other. Guide Dog Services General Manager Ian Cox says around fifty percent of creating a guide dog is about how the genes interact and it is the job of Guide Dog Services to try and predict this.
