68. Jewish Community In New Zealand
From a post made to soc.culture.newzealand.
http://nz.com/NZ/Culture/Jewish/
This is a version of a post Ronit Alon made on soc.culture.new-zealand . I thought it might be of general interest, so I'm including it here. I make no representations about the accuracy of the information it contains. It was posted in response to this
Jewish Community in New Zealand
by Ronit Alon dscrrax@gsusgi2.gsu.edu 4 Jan 1994 I found Jews in NZ to be a rare commodity. In Grafton Hall, my dorm at varsity, I was the only one. And the only one most of my mates there had ever run into in their lives. (Which meant they didn't give a stuff, which was quite fine by me.) On Passover I carried my matzoh and kosher for passover food on a backpacking trip with the uni tramping club thru the deserts of Tongariro and have never felt more like one of my ancestors fleeing the Pharoh thru the Sinai. In Taupo I ran into a Maori friend my age who wore a Jewish star because her Mom's father was a Jew. There were many such Jews in history who intermarried, lots with Maoris, and lost touch with their own culture but spawned so many kiwi kids. Oh, and I never did find a decent bagel in NZ. Vic Park market sold some that tasted more like regular bread. Anyone found any good ones?

Culture Next New Zealanders have made a profound impact in the areas of art, poetry, music, film, and architecture. Not only have the artists reached local recognition, but also gained worldwide apperception. New Kiwi self-confidence is revealed intensely in literature, film and theater. Opera diva Kiri Te Kanawa performs regularly nationally and internationally. Writers such as Witi Ihimaera, Albert Wendt, Patricia Grace, and Keri Hulme are also international figures. Fine Arts In the past, Kiwis were hostile towards art. In 1982, the McDougall Gallery in Christchurch planned to spend $10,000 on a painting by Colin McCahon, arguably the country's most significant and contentious painter, and this triggered ire among locals. At present, however, McCahon's paintings are auctioned at very high prices in many international collections.

Culture Back l Next Music New Zealand musicians need not be in Australia or become Australian to make their debut in the international stages. Crowded House became a global hit while recording in New Zealand and just recently, Pauley Fuimana saw huge success with his hit How Bizarre. Foreign music still rank top on radio stations' list, but local artists have now been given increased airtime. Bic Runga, Annie Crummer, Moana and the Moa Hunters, and Headless Chickens are among the many that produce distinct local sounds. Lovers of classical music are well served by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and regional orchestra in the four main centers. Chamber and jazz music are also rapidly flourishing. New Zealand opera has made a comeback with world-class productions performed regularly in the main centers, each of which has its own opera company. Performances by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Dame Malvina Major, and Sir Donald McIntyre guarantee packed houses.
