Reviewed by Caroline Daley, University of Auckland In 1945 a New Zealand film critic, Gordon Mirams, claimed that if there was such a thing as 'New Zealand culture' it was 'to a large extent the creation of Hollywood'. According to Mirams, only drinking tea was more popular in New Zealand than going to the movies. Official statistics back him up. For many years New Zealanders were amongst the most frequent movie goers in the western world, but few of the films they went to see were made at home. From 1940 until the early 1970s, for example, only a handful of features were shot in New Zealand. In New Zealand Film, 1912-1996 , Helen Martin and Sam Edwards offer a comprehensive filmography of the feature films that managed to be made during film's first century in New Zealand. Responding to Tragedy: the Police at Tangiwai, Wahine and Mt Erebus disasters
One of the more harrowing aspects of police work is dealing with disaster. This exhibition explores three major disasters of the post-war period to show how the police ability to respond has developed over that time. The exhibition includes historical radio coverage and previously unpublished images from the New Zealand Police files and other sources. We Call it Home: A History of State Housing in New Zealand
For nearly one hundred years the state has provided rental homes for tens of thousands of New Zealanders unable to afford a home of their own. Just about all of us know someone who grew up in a state house, yet we know little of their individual stories. This exhibition is designed get past tenants and suppliers of state houses to tell their state house stories. These will form the basis of a new history of state housing, to be published in 2005. The exhibition includes film clips from the 1940s and over 40 images.

The 'American invasion': American forces and the New Zealand people
This exhibition marks the 60th anniversary of the 'American invasion' when from 1942-44 an estimated 100,000 United States troops were stationed in New Zealand and changed the way we saw the world. The exhibition features almost 100 images, short topical essays by Jock Phillips and sound archive files from Radio New Zealand documentaries. We are also inviting people to contribute their memories of these years which we hope to then incorporate with the other material in the exhibition.
