Lying between the 46th and 61st parallels, the province consists of two distinct geographical entities: Newfoundland and Labrador. The island of Newfoundland, which forms the southern and eastern portion of the province, is a large triangular-shaped area of some 112 000 km2, while the province's total area is 405 720 km2. Located at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River, the island is about halfway between the centre of North America and the coast of western Europe. The island of Newfoundland is separated from the Canadian mainland by the Strait of Belle Isle in the north and by the wider Cabot Strait in the south. The mainland, Labrador, is bordered by northeastern Quebec. Approximately two and a half times as large as the island, it remains a vast, pristine wilderness, where the northern lights, or aurora borealis, flicker over the largest caribou herd in the world. The province's coastline, stretching over more than 17 000 km, is varied and scenic with its bold headlands, deep fiords and countless small coves and offshore islands. The interiors of both Labrador and Newfoundland have a rolling, rugged topography, deeply etched by glacial activity and broken by lakes and swift-flowing rivers. Much of the island and southern and central Labrador is covered by a thick boreal forest of black spruce and balsam fir mixed with birch, tamarack and balsam poplar. Northern Labrador is largely devoid of forest and is marked by the spectacular Torngat Mountains, which rise abruptly from the sea to heights of up to 1 676 metres.

Above is a graphic of Canada. It is somewhat crude, but if you want detail I am sure that you can find it in any atlas. My intention here is to provide you with some simple geography. Canada is a part of North America just north of the United States. The population is about 26 million people (which isn't many for the size of our country). I live in Newfoundland which is the island province on Canada's east coast. It is the island portion of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. If you move your pointer to the island on the eastcoast of the graphic above, it will light up showing you where Newfoundland is. I originally drew the above for another web page I work on, but I thought I would use it myself as well. This graphic shows the island of Newfoundland plus the mainland portion named Labrador. Most people forget Labrador is even a part of our province most likely because they are physically separated. Newfoundland is (in my opinion) a great place to live and to visit! I live in the capitol city of St.John's which has a population somewhere around 150,000 people. Not a big city by any standards, but we are the oldest in North America. If you move your pointer over the image on the left towards it's east coast St.John's will be highlighted. The piece sort of attatched to the island is called the Avalon Peninsula and St.John's is on the upper right tip. I don't have many links relating to Newfoundland yet though I have come across some great sites. Now that I have decided on a Newfoundland page I will have to save more of the sites that I visit.

Geography Total Area: 405,720 km Area of Newfoundland: 111,390 km Area of Labrador: 294,330 km Water Area: 34,030 km Coastline: 17,542 km Approximate travel times by air, from St. John's London: 5 hours New York: 4.5 hours Toronto: 3 hours Vancouver: 9 hours Boston: 3.5 hours Time Zones Newfoundland is located in a time zone unique in North America, half an hour later than Atlantic Time, one and a half hours later than Central Canada and four and a half hours later than the west coast of the country, the only place in Canada with a split in the set variations of one hour between time zones. Daylight Saving Time is observed from April to October after which the province returns to Newfoundland Standard Time. Labrador operates on Atlantic Time, except for the portion between L'Anse au Clair and Norman Bay, which is on Newfoundland time.
