Government Newfoundland and Labrador: History and People History The central region of the island of Newfoundland was once the home of the now extinct Beothuk Indians. The first Europeans to visit Newfoundland were Norsemen, who arrived in the late 10th century. (The Norse settlement at l'Anse aux Meadows was the world's first cultural discovery location to receive recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.) Other early visitors included the Basques, Portuguese, Spanish, British and French. In the 16th century and earlier they staged fishing expeditions into the new founde lande. In 1497, the Italian seafarer Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot) landed on the island on June 24, 1497, on the feast of St. John the Baptist. Cabot called the new land "St. John's Isle" in honour of the saint and claimed it for Henry VII of England, his employer. Warfare between the British and the French shaped the history of Newfoundland during the 1600s and 1700s. In 1662 France established a fort and colony at Placentia. The Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 reconfirmed British sovereignty over Newfoundland and the fishing banks.

It's virtual. Its bilingual. It's all about young Canadians celebrating their history. The Heritage Fair NFLD Fishing Vessel The Heritage Fair is an event that actively involves Canada's young people, schools, businesses and community organizations in a contemporary celebration of Canada's shared traditions and history. Students use any medium of their choice to tell stories and share information about Canadian people, events, buildings and places and then share the results of their efforts with the community at large. The Virtual Heritage Fair Student Display For Fair The Virtual Heritage Fair takes the Heritage Fair concept to the Internet. Students and teachers now have the opportunity to celebrate their part in Canada's history by publishing heritage content online. Poems, stories, interviews, pictures, and even web pages by Canadian students are published on the site. Going Global Model of Old Style School Room The virtual nature of the fair provides a unique way to enhance young Canadians' knowledge of each other and our shared history. In the early 19th cent. the Hudson's Bay Company developed the fur trade, and this, together with the expansion of the fishing industry, led to increased immigration from Europe, particularly Ireland. Representative government was introduced in 1832 and parliamentary government in 1855. The port of Heart's Content became the western terminus of the transatlantic cable in 1866. In 1869, Newfoundland voters rejected union with Canada; in 1895, after a disastrous fire in St. John's and the failure of local banks, negotiations to join Canada resumed but were unsuccessful. Relatively little attention had been paid to Labrador, but in 1895 iron ore was discovered in the Grand Falls (now Churchill Falls) region. As part of the Anglo-French Entente Cordiale of 1904, France abandoned the French Shore. Possession of Labrador was disputed by Quebec and Newfoundland until 1927, when the British privy council demarcated the western boundary, enlarged Labrador's land area, and confirmed Newfoundland's title to it.

IEEE Canada home page about administration history The Eastern Canada Council and its Sections
A Brief History
The Montreal Section is the oldest ECC member. Founded in 1936, it has over 1700 members, many of which are active in its 13 technical Chapters. With so many Chapters, a primary goal of the Section is to recruit, train and support technical Chapter personnel. Conferences are an important part of Montreal Section activity. A one day seminar entitled "Montreal Computer Graphics '94" is a highlight planned for this fall. In May, the Section continued its successful annual tradition of hosting a dinner Banquet with industry. The Montreal Section and local industry have become valuable partners in developing the local electrotechnical community. The Ottawa Section was the next one, being founded in 1944. Being at the heart of Canada's silicon valley, Ottawa hosts about 50% of the Council membership, thus making it the largest of the seven. The challenge of staying in touch with its members, has led to the launching of the IEEE Canada Electronic Newsletter. Through E-mail, this can reach out to all IEEE members across the country. With 13 technical Chapters, the Ottawa Section has been very active with education in the community and industry. A significant event for the Section, the city of Ottawa and indeed the country was when the IEEE designated the Alouette/IRIS Satellite Program as an International Milestone of Electrical Engineering last year. The Saint Maurice Section was founded in 1954. While officially the smallest Section in the ECC, it has been one of the most active. The Section is affiliated with the "Université du Québec a Trois-Rivières". There have been many joint conferences with the University. Last year alone it held conferences on Computer Network, Nuclear Radiation, Micro-electronics projects, Computer Assisted Engineering and more. An important event for this year was the IEEE-PELS Workshop on Computers in Power Electronics which had participants from 22 countries. The Student Branch is very active. This year, the project "Recycling day" organized by Mr. Sylvain Pratte, will receive the "RAB Rally K. Wilson Regional Student Activity" award at Halifax. The Branch also operates a very successful McNaughton Centre.
