History
The earliest traces of human habitation in Nicaragua are the 10,000-year-old Footprints of the Acahualinca - prints preserved under layers of volcanic ash of people and animals running towards Lago de Managua. Around the 10th century AD, indigenous people from Mexico migrated to Nicaragua's Pacific lowlands, and Aztec culture was adopted by many Indians when Aztecs moved south during the 15th century to establish a trading colony. La Prensa, the newspaper critical of the dictatorship. When Chamorro was assassinated in 1978 the people erupted in violence and declared a general strike. The revolt spread and former moderates joined with the FSLN to overthrow the Somoza regime. The Sandinistas marched victoriously into Managua on 19 July 1979. They inherited a poverty-stricken country with high rates of homelessness and illiteracy, and insufficient health care. The new government nationalized the lands of the Somozas and established farming cooperatives. They waged a massive education campaign which reduced illiteracy from 50% to 13%, and introduced an immunization program which eliminated polio and reduced infant mortality to a third of the rate it had been before the revolution. It wasn't long b efore the country encountered serious problems from its 'good neighbor' to the north. The US government, which had supported the Somozas until the end, were alarmed that the Nicaraguans were setting a dangerous example to the region. A successful popular revolution was not what the US government wanted. Three months after Ronald Reagan took office in 1981, the USA announced that it was suspending aid to Nicaragua and allocating US$10 million for the organization of counter-revolutionary groups known as Contras. The Sandinstas responded by using much of the nation's resources to defend itself against the US-funded insurgency.

Language and Communication Across Cultures

Spring 1999 How To Describe Another Culture:
DEVELOPING A "CULTURAL FRAME"
Pretest
Rationale Central Topic/Readings Background information ... Resources I. Pretest: Directions:
Near the end of the course, you will be asked to write a term paper that describes some culture or subculture. To make sure that you fully understand the task, you are to write a brief essay answering the following two questions. 1. What is your definition of "culture"? Are institutions such as museums or cathedrals the best place to study culture? Give at least three concrete examples illustrating differences between two cultures that might cause the people from two different countries to misunderstand each other. 2. What are some of the important questions to explore when learning about another culture? What are the important things to observe? Use concrete examples when possible. II. Rationale for this Module: The purpose of this module is to teach students in a course on intercultural communication how to explore a culture or subculture different from their own through reading, direct observation, and interviews with people who have lived in the culture. Since culture can have many meanings, this module will provide a model for student term papers based on the culture(s) of Nicaragua. Throughout the course, students will learn about different "cultural frames," one way of describing the values, beliefs and habits of people from different countries and speech communities. Having examined this module, which concentrates on Nicaragua, students will independently explore some other culture of their own choosing as preparation for writing a term paper. The module is designed to be a web-based unit with easy links to additional information, but students may produce either traditional academic papers or hypertext documents for their final projects.

Travel Center Country Guide: NICARAGUA Business Culture Greetings and Courtesies Business Ethic and Framework Women Meetings ... Business Attire GREETINGS AND COURTESIES Handshakes are appropriate for both men and women. Male friends may hug and female friends may hug each other briefly and brush their cheeks while making a kissing motion. Considerable deference is usually shown to the elderly. BUSINESS ETHIC AND FRAMEWORK Respect and personal dignity lie at the core of Nicaraguan business and social culture. Although Nicaraguans are generally informal, their business and social culture is based on correct, often strongly hierarchical, but personal relationships. To Nicaraguans, work is far from the most important part of life, but it is an increasingly important sphere, and they do adhere to the forms and protocols that govern it. WOMEN Although women generally occupy a secondary status in heavily male-dominated and macho-influenced Nicaragua, many operate businesses and may be accorded considerable personal freedom. Nicaraguan women are becoming more common and more accepted in business in general, although their presence remains rare in the upper levels of business. In general, foreign businesswomen should experience few problems. MEETINGS Appointments are necessary and should be made at least two weeks in advance. Punctuality is observed by Nicaraguans. Business deals may require several meetings and repeated trips to the country. Despite recent experience with communal forms of decision making, actual decisions are nevertheless almost always made at a high level of authority. It is important to cultivate personal relationships with all peers, however, because the quality of these relationships may strongly influence the actual decision maker even when your immediate counterpart is not the one making the decision.

Nicaragua After the Storm
Nicaragua's home gardens have been struggling in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch. Imagine a carefully planned garden that provides your family with essential crops for food, fuel, and medicine. Imagine relying on this home garden to sustain your family until the next cycle of planting and harvesting. Now imagine all that erased in just a few hours. That is exactly what happened to the people of Nicaragua on October 27, 1998, when Hurricane Mitch released his force on the Central American isthmus. Nicaraguans have had to literally rebuild the land where they used to grow a wide array of plant species necessary for their survival.
In 1999, through an international project, the National Gardening Association helped educate American students, teachers, and parents about Nicaragua's culture before and after Hurricane Mitch.
Making Connections Through Gardening
NGA's "Making Connections Through Gardening" project in cooperation with TechnoServe, set up 46 school-based Ambassador Clubs throughout the U.S. and  Nicaragua. The goal of the project was to increase American students' understanding of the environmental impact of gardening and agricultural practices in developing countries, as well as the effect Mitch had on the people of rural Nicaragua. Assessing the effects of a natural disaster on people who work and live on the land is key to building relief efforts that get to the core of the crisis.
