Nicaragua Culture Spanish is the language of Nicaragua, but English and a number of Indian languages are spoken on the Caribbean coast. The main religion is Catholicism, although there are a number of Protestant sects such as the Pentecostals and the Baptists. The Moravian church, introduced by British missionaries, is important on the Caribbean coast. A typical meal in Nicaragua consists of eggs or meat, beans and rice, salad (cabbage and tomatoes), tortillas and fruit in season. Most common of all Nicaraguan foods is gallo pinto , a blend of rice and beans, with cooking water from the beans added to color the rice. Other traditional dishes include bajo , a mix of beef, green and ripe plantains and yucca (cassava), and , yucca served with fried pork skins and coleslaw. Street vendors sell interesting drinks such as tiste , made from cacao and corn, and posol con leche , a corn-and-milk drink. Nicaragua boasts the best beer and rum in Central America. back to top

Flag of Nicaragua Background:
Settled as a colony of Spain in the 1520s, Nicaragua gained its independence in 1821. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990 and again in 1996 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

Many countries spend huge sums of money to promote a nature or culture that is so run over with tourists, the reason they were once desirable no longer exists. Yet there are hidden gems, places with out any hype, just real culture and abundant and wild nature. Nicaragua is one such place with a natural beauty that is thankfully still uncompromised and a warm and vibrant culture that is totally unpretentious.
Nicaragua is Central America's largest country with its lowest population density and its nature is nothing less than stunning. Whether exploring the hidden beaches of an undeveloped Pacific coast, cruising down a jungle river surrounded by rain forest filled with over 700 species of birds, discovering pre-Columbian basalt idols and petroglyphs on one of Lake Nicaragua's 400+ islands, swimming in a warm and clear volcanic crater lake, lounging on a empty white sand Caribbean island beach or hiking in virgin cloud forest filled with orchids, butterflies and howler monkeys on a sleeping volcano. The list is just too long. Nicaragua is also home to red-roofed Spanish colonial cities with magnificent churches and cathedrals, little white villages set in coffee and pineapple farms, island bound art colonies, an unsurpassed passion for poetry, a wide open countryside where horses and

Domestic and U.S. opposition to Sandinista reforms led to the bitter Contra War, devastating the economy and costing an enormous number of lives. Today, having accomplished a remarkable level of reconciliation, Nicaraguans are engaged in a fascinating range of discussions concerning issues of development, including alternative approaches, within their country's rich cultural context. This program takes you to the key cultural and historic sites where Spanish colonial powers, the Sandinista revolution, and the Contra War have left their legacy. Conditions permitting, you travel to Cuba for a comparative analysis and added perspectives on Nicaragua's economic, social, and political development. Throughout the program, lectures and field visits illustrate ways in which social and political movements, including women's movements, are informed by and respond to both domestic and external influences, including U.S. foreign policy.
