    Conclusion.

Introduction: Ethnoarchaeology is the study of living societies in order to better understand the past. If we can learn the cultural dynamics of an existing culture, we may have more tools to interpret what we find in the archaeological record. Ethnoarchaeology often focuses particularly on the behaviour patterns responsible for creating physical objects and their spatial distribution. Material culture a reflection of our culture through the material goods we leave behind. For example if you look inside your house and imagine everything that would survive in the ground for a thousand years you soon realize that only non-organic, hard things would make it. Think again what this would tell people about how you live your everyday life, how you think, how you act, how you dress etc. It wouldn't tell them a lot, would it? You can now see one of the hardest parts of archaeology...using the leftovers to understand the complete culture! This study, using the ethnoarchaeological approach, is useful for helping archaeologists in West Africa to understand what they find in an excavation. The reason I chose to do this particular study is personal. My husband is from Cameroon and we were lucky enough to have identical twin boys.

    Fundamentalism’s Toll on Nigerian Music
    'Shariahphrenia' Reigns in Northern Nigeria
    Jean-Christophe Servant
    Kano, Nigeria
    Nov. 18, 2002
Members of the Zamfara State Vigilante Group, a group dedicated to enforcing Shariah law, stand in front their headquarters building in Gusau, the capital of the northern Nigerian state (Photo: Ivan Watson/AFP). There’s a little book you can find in open-air markets of Africa titled, Who Are the Sinful Women, According to the Quran and Hadith . It contains this thought: “Music and dancing have been found to be a great stimulant of carnal sex, a stepping stone to fornication and adultery. It is therefore essential that every Muslim man and woman take utmost care to reclaim and preserve himself or herself from this.” In the continent that invented rhythm, the passage could seem amusing, like much of the mystical literature that, stemming from every kind of religious tradition, fills the market stalls of Africa. Amusing except that there’s something special about this book. Published in the Nigerian city of Ilorin, the book was purchased at a market in Kano, the metropolis of northern Nigeria and the informal capital of the 12 Nigerian states that have adopted a puritanical version of Shariah law over the past three years—and, in so doing, have threatened the secular identity and constitution of sub-Saharan Africa’s most populous country.

Although the following is not a complete, comprehensive list of historical tools, it highlights four major areas of analysis that tell historians something about the past. It also gives an example for each of these, describing how they might be used in the example of Jos, Nigeria. Compare our list with your own. Did you come up with any different ideas? What were they? Any of the same ideas? What were they? Hausa storytellers like this man relay oral histories to their communities.
    Written sources
: A wealth of literature has been written about Nigeria. Although much of what we read has been written recently in European languages, there are many writings which date back further and use indigenous African languages and Arabic. Historians read these writings to learn about the history of a region. An example that would be useful to learning about the history of northern Nigeria in the 16th century CE is Imam Ibn Furtuwa's writing on the wars of the Mai of Bornu, Idris Alaoma. Oral sources : Even amongst people who have not written down their history, often a rich oral history has been passed from generation to generation. An example of a historian who drew heavily on oral traditions of West Africa, including north-central Nigeria, was A. Hampate Ba who wrote the

The Status of Human Rights Organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa
    Nigeria
CONTEXT Although human rights violations in Nigeria have been commonplace under military rule, 1993 was a particularly challenging year for Nigerian human rights groups. Former President General Ibrahim Babangida annulled the results of a presidential election, which would have brought the country back to civilian rule, and installed an interim government. In mid-November, Defense Minister General Sani Abacha forced the interim government to resign, effectively staging the seventh coup d'etat since Nigeria's independence. The regime banned all political meetings and associations. No timetable was set for the return to civilian rule. Throughout this crisis, the human rights community has banded together under a coalition called the Campaign for Democracy (CD). Riots erupted in Lagos in early July 1993 and the regime detained hundreds of protesters for a month. CD called for additional strikes and demonstrations. Human rights abuses during this time were widespread, including ethnically-based attacks, killing of demonstrators, detentions of activists and journalists, and interference with freedom of expression and association. The Nigerian press, known for being outspoken, came under even more fire from government authorities during the political crisis. The government closed down several magazine houses. Abuses by members of the police and security forces remain a persistent human rights problem. There are frequent cases of harassment and extra-judicial killings by law enforcement officers. Abysmal prison conditions have also been highlighted by the human rights community.
