Nihilism: There's Nothing to It.
December 15, 1999. The philosopher Thomas Hibbs heard something ominous in Jerry Seinfeld's sitcom proudly proclaiming itself a "show about nothing." That something Hibbs heard was nothing with a capital N - Nihilism. The corollary to Nietzsche's announcement, "God is dead," is that anything goes: there is no high culture or low, no noble and no base, no right and wrong. Thomas Hibbs says that's the ethic he sees all through pop culture today. Sitcoms fill hours with characters obsessing about the inconsequential. Sardonic films make murderers into celebrities - as in "Natural Born Killers" - or psychological advisors - as in "Silence of the Lambs" - or just into comedians - as in pick your favorite Quentin Tarantino film. Hibbs draws on Tocqueville, Arendt and Nietzsche - who warned that democracies were especially susceptible to this kind of spiritual flattening and cynicism. Nihilism and popular culture from the Exorcist to Seinfeld - Thomas Hibb 's new book is titled "Shows About Nothing: Nihilism in Popular Culture" - in the second hour of the Connection.

Fun with Nihilism by Ken Ervin
Photo credit: KRT Nihilism . The very mention of the word invokes images of trench coat-clad teens shooting up a high school. Thankfully, those types of tragedies are few and far between, but did you realize that we are confronted with nihilism imagery on a daily basis? It’s true. Nihilism , simply defined, comes from the Latin verb nihil , which means nothing or that which does not exist . As a philosophy, nihilism can be broken down and expressed in different ways or subsets. One subset we see daily is existential nihilism ethical nihilism . Also known as moral nihilism , this philosophy rejects the idea of overarching, absolute morals or ethical values. After all, if life has no meaning, what good are values? Why bother to follow a moral code? As mentioned before, we see nihilistic imagery daily. Where? Pull out the TV Guide . Many shows are prime examples of nihilism played out. One of the best-known examples, cited by Thomas Hibbs in his book Shows about Nothing ethical (or moral nihilism As for the existential nihilism Now that we’ve identified two common forms of nihilism, the real fun can begin. The next time you sit down on the couch to watch your favorite TV show, try to identify the nihilistic plots and subplots. What message is the show sending? Is it nihilistic? If so, is it

25. Virtuism, Nihilism And The Terrorization Of The Individual
a new term to give place to this influence that philosophy has outside nihilism andmaterialism seems to be justifiable and permissable in the Academic Wake.
http://www.eskimo.com/~telical/virtnull.html
Virtuism, Nihilism and the Terrorization of the Individual
Virtuism also believes in aspects of the "teachings of Neitzsche" but these are ideas that didn't begin with him. If a Virtuist is also a Christian or has strong faith in God it doesn't mean that he is "like other Christians" or like others who have faith in God. I don't know how such an analysis of such as Neitzsche's can pertain to people like Pascal, Darwin, Martin Luther King, Jr., or Einstein, all of whom had a faith in God. Nietzsche's is probably the philosophy that has had the most wrong with it in modern philosophy, and luckily already the most legitimate criticisms against it. Witness the criticism of Camus. What has to be explored is the many philosphies of the modern, knowing what many modern minds think. This becomes a philosophy of understanding the philosophy of people. Somehow it is a popular notion that theists or Christians are close minded. But what has changed in the last two hundred years? Wasn't it simply a public-relations campaign on the part of Nietzche, of Lenin and Stalin? And what is the result of what these people put in its place? It is very interesting to see how old many philosophical statements are. In 1751, Hume said, "Moral Judgement is essentially a matter or sentiment, not reason." Virtuism unites the realm of the beautiful with the realm of something one may want to call a moral judgement. But it is inherently not a statement about sentimentality or the "metaphysics of morality" but about sociology, law, anthropology, psychology and aesthetics. Isn't anthropology the discipline which most often has a respect for man's need for deity? Isn't sociology and psychology good benchmarks for the analysis of the effects of a philosophy on an individual or society? And can not aesthetics be shown to display what belief in God can do to the artist? Look at the wholistic beauty that theistic painters showed in their works from the Pre-Raphealites school back to the original pre-Raphealites. Yet these areas still needed significant breakthroughs in 1751.

Conclusion

Origins "Nihilism" comes from the Latin nihil , or nothing, which means not anything, that which does not exist. It appears in the verb "annihilate," meaning to bring to nothing, to destroy completely. Early in the nineteenth century, Friedrich Jacobi used the word to negatively characterize transcendental idealism. It only became popularized, however, after its appearance in Ivan Turgenev's novel Fathers and Sons (1862) where he used "nihilism" to describe the crude scientism espoused by his character Bazarov who preaches a creed of total negation. In Russia, nihilism became identified with a loosely organized revolutionary movement (C.1860-1917) that rejected the authority of the state, church, and family. In his early writing, anarchist leader Mikhael Bakunin (1814-1876) composed the notorious entreaty still identified with nihilism: "Let us put our trust in the eternal spirit which destroys and annihilates only because it is the unsearchable and eternally creative source of all lifethe passion for destruction is also a creative passion!" ( Reaction in Germany , 1842). The movement advocated a social arrangement based on rationalism and materialism as the sole source of knowledge and individual freedom as the highest goal. By rejecting man's spiritual essence in favor of a solely materialistic one, nihilists denounced God and religious authority as antithetical to freedom. The movement eventually deteriorated into an ethos of subversion, destruction, and anarchy, and by the late 1870s, a nihilist was anyone associated with clandestine political groups advocating terrorism and assassination.
