In school he was an ambitious student, but not one who excelled. Upon graduation, he entered Whittier College. Nixon graduated second in his class and won a scholarship to Duke University law school, where he graduated third in his class. He returned to California and took a job at a law firm in Whittier. Nixon served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, Nixon ran successfully for Congress. He quickly distinguished himself as one of Congress' most fervent anti-communists, leading the charge against accused spy Alger Hiss. In 1950, Nixon was elected to the Senate. He was picked as a running mate in 1952 by Republican presidential candidate Dwight Eisenhower . As vice president, he took an active interest in national security affairs. In 1960, Nixon waged a vigorous campaign for the presidency, losing to Democrat John F. Kennedy in the closest presidential race in U.S. history. Perhaps more bitter was his defeat in the 1962 California gubernatorial campaign. Richard M. Nixon (January 9, 1913 - April 22, 1994) On February 17, 1972, a crowd of thousands gathered on the White House lawn for a historic send-off. For Richard Milhous Nixon, the trip to Beijing would be the journey of a lifetime. He would be the first U.S. president to go to China. "He knew that for this flight," wrote Max Frankel in the New York Times , "no matter what else occurred, he would always be remembered." Born in Yorba Linda, CA in 1913 into a working-class Quaker family, Nixon enjoyed a meteoric early political career. After a stint in the Navy in WWII, he served two consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican from California. A member of the House Un-American Activities Committee, he rose to national prominence for his role in the Alger Hiss espionage case, quickly establishing his reputation as a hard-line anti-Communist. It is no small irony that the man who accused the Truman administration of "losing" China to the Communists in 1949 would be responsible for establishing friendly relations with the People's Republic of China some 20 years later. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1950, Nixon was chosen by Dwight D. Eisenhower as his vice-presidential running mate. The ticket swept into office in 1952, and was re-elected four years later. As vice-president, Nixon traveled extensively and took an active interest in U.S. foreign affairs.

Record of Historic Richard Nixon-Zhou Enlai Talks in February 1972 Now Declassified During 21-28 February 1972, President Richard Nixon spent an extraordinary week in the People's Republic of China (PRC). The first U.S. president to visit China, Nixon was playing a central role in opening up a new political relationship with the PRC after decades of mutual estrangement. The highlight of Nixon's trip was his meeting with Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong but its substance lay in a series of almost-daily extended conversations with Premier Zhou Enlai. Twenty seven years after these events, the National Archives has finally declassified the Nixon-Zhou conversations in response to a mandatory declassification review request made by the National Security Archive in 1994. Once highly classified"Top Secret/Sensitive/Exclusively Eyes Only"all but three of the documents were released in their entirety. Significant excisions appear in the Nixon-Zhou discussions of Taiwan, Japan, South Asia, and the Soviet Union. He left the presidency on Aug. 9, 1974, while facing almost certain impeachment for his involvement in the Watergate scandal. This scandal included a break-in at the Democratic national headquarters and other illegal activities by employees of Nixon's 1972 reelection committee. Nixon's attempts to cover up these crimes became a major part of the scandal. Nixon was succeeded as president by Vice President Gerald R. Ford. One month after Nixon resigned, Ford pardoned him for all federal crimes he may have committed during his presidency. Nixon's presidency Although Nixon left office in disgrace, he won respect for his conduct of foreign policy. As president, he ended U.S. military participation in the Vietnam War in 1973 and eased the tension that had existed for years between the United States and both China and the Soviet Union. Nixon became the first president to visit China while in office. He also visited the Soviet Union. Nixon won congressional approval of U.S.-Soviet trade agreements and agreements to limit the production of nuclear weapons. At home, Nixon was challenged by sharply rising prices. He attended local public schools and Whittier College, went to Duke University Law School on a scholarship and placed third in his graduating class. His Presidency: Under Nixon's administration, there was a cease-fire agreement with Vietnam. Nixon began the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks with the Soviet Union. The Watergate controversy led to his resignation, but he was granted "a full, complete and absolute pardon." He was later known as an expert in international affairs. His Life: Reconciliation was the first goal set by President Richard M. Nixon. The Nation was painfully divided, with turbulence in the cities and war overseas. During his Presidency, Nixon succeeded in ending American fighting in Viet Nam and improving relations with the U.S.S.R. and China. But the Watergate scandal brought fresh divisions to the country and ultimately led to his resignation.

Always a good student, he was invited by Harvard and Yale to apply for scholarships, but his older brother's illness and the Depression made his presence close to home necessary, and he was attended nearby Whittier College, where he graduated second in his class in 1934. He went on to law school at Duke University, where his seriousness and determination won him the nickname "Gloomy Gus." He graduated third in his class and applied for jobs with both large Northeastern law firms and the FBI His applications were all rejected, however, and he was forced to go home to southern California, where his mother helped get him a job at a friend's local law firm. At the outbreak of World War Two, Nixon went to work briefly for the tire-rationing section the Office of Price Administration in Washington, DC, and eight months later, he joined the Navy and was sent to the Pacific as a supply officer. He was popular with his men, and such an accomplished poker player that he was able to send enough of his comrades-in-arms' money back home to help fund his first political campaign. Shortly after returning from the war, Nixon entered politics, answering a Republican party call in the newspaper for someone to run against the five-term Democratic Congressman, Jerry Voorhis. Nixon seemed the perfect man for the job, and he was welcomed generously by the California Republican party, who considered him "salable merchandise."
