Richard Nixon's resignation
August 8, 1974
President Richard M. Nixon Good evening. This is the 37th time I have spoken to you from this office, where so many decisions have been made that shaped the history of this Nation. Each time I have done so to discuss with you some matter than I believe affected the national interest. In all the decisions I have made in my public life, I have always tried to do what was best for the Nation. Throughout the long and difficult period of Watergate, I have felt it was my duty to persevere, to make every possible effort to complete the term of office to which you elected me. In the past few days, however, it has become evident to me that I no longer have a strong enough political base in the Congress to justify continuing that effort. As long as there was such a base, I felt strongly that it was necessary to see the constitutional process through to its conclusion, that to do otherwise would be unfaithful to the spirit of that deliberately difficult process and a dangerously destabilizing precedent for the future. But with the disappearance of that base, I now believe that the constitutional purpose has been served, and there is no longer a need for the process to be prolonged.

Description: This is the story of the role of the press in the Watergate scandal told from the standpoint of the Washington Post reporters who broke the story. Ben Bradlee (editor of the Post) and Carl Bernstein (one of the reporters), when interviewed on the History Channel, stated that while the screenplay did not repeat their exact words, the film accurately portrayed the events that occurred. Bradlee stated that the film was like a documentary in its adherence to the truth.
Benefits: This movie accurately portrays newspaper reporters working to expose criminal activities by a president, his advisors, and his political party. It displays the inner workings of a major newspaper and describes how many governmental institutions work. The film portrays a pivotal event in U.S. history and brings home the fact that Richard Nixon and his co-conspirators attempted nothing less than the wholesale subversion of the U.S. Constitution and the democratic process. http://www.time.com/time/personoftheyear/archive/photohistory/nixon.html
AP Richard Nixon was named TIME's Person of the Year in 1971 and 1972 with Henry Kissinger "I was not lying. I said things that later on seemed to be untrue."
After serving as Dwight Eisenhower's vice-president and losing the 1960 presidential race in an extremely close election to John F. Kennedy, Nixon was elected 37th president of the U.S. in 1968. He withdrew American troops from Vietnam and signed the first strategic arms limitation treaty with the Soviet Union. In 1972 Nixon became the first U.S. president to visit communist China. But he's remembered most for the Watergate burglary and subsequent cover-up. On August 9, 1974, he became the first president to resign from office. As TIME described Nixon's presidency when it named him Man of the Year for 1971 and for 1972, "He reached for a place in history by opening a dialogue with China... He doggedly pursued his own slow timetable in withdrawing the nation's combat troops from their longest and most humiliating war... all... with a flair for secrecy and surprise that has marked his leadership as both refreshingly flexible and disconcertingly unpredictable..." Mike's Notes: Richard Nixon's epitaph, a line from his 1969 inaugural address, reads, "The greatest honor history can bestow is the title of peacemaker." Nixon is buried on the grounds of his presidential library, as has been the tradition of most presidents since Herbert Hoover. However, the state of California has a law which does not allow people to buried on privately-owned property. Consequently, the library had to donate this little section of the property to the church where Nixon was a member. U.S. President Resigns
By Sue Schuurman 24 Years Ago This Week On Aug. 9, 1974, Richard Milhous Nixon became the first U.S. President to resign from office and thus barely avoided being impeached by Congress for the Watergate cover-up. These days the word impeachment is back in our daily banter, yet the atmosphere is dramatically different. Whether because the issue is adultery and cover-up rather than a break-in and cover-up or the "booming" economy or our post-Vietnam, post-Watergate political cynicism, Americans don't seem nearly as eager to boot our current "Teflon" chief executive, President Bill Clinton, out. "Nixon Prepares to Resign "WASHINGTONRichard M. Nixon prepared to tell an expectant nation tonight that he would resign as President. "Word that the President had decided to leave office rather than undergo the trauma of impeachment came from sources in the White House. ... "Congressional sources said the President's resignationfirst in the 198-year history of the Republicwould be effective at noon on Friday. ... "His presidency mortally wounded by the repeated blows of the Watergate disclosures, Nixon made his decision the same week he delivered the most devastating blow, the announcement on Monday that he had withheld damaging evidence from the prosecutors, Congress and his own lawyers.

Nixon was the only President to resign in disgrace. His crime was his involvement in the Watergate break-in and coverup. During his administration he established relations with Communist China and extracted the United States from Vietnam. Elected:
    The Early Years
Richard Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California. Nixon grew up among the poverty of the Yorba Linda. Twice he nearly died, once from an accident and once from pneumonia. During the time when the Teapot Dome Scandal became public he told his mother one day:" I would like to become a lawyerÐ an honest lawyer who can't be bought by the crooks.". The most traumatic event of his childhood was the death of is brother Harold from tuberculosis. Nixon was educated in public schools. He entered Fullerton High schools, and in his junior year he transferred to Whittier High School in 1930. He graduated near the top of his class. Nixon attended Whittier College from 1930-1934, graduating second in a class of 85. He was President of the Student body. He went on to Duke University Law School on scholarship. He graduated in 1937 second in the class of 37. He was admitted to the California Bar the same year. Nixon practiced Law in Whittier after being admitted to the Bar. In 1940 he became involved in forming a company to manufacture frozen orange juice. The business failed within two years. In 1942 Nixon joined the navy. He rose from lieutenant junior grade to lieutenant commander, he served in Pacific, primarily in Logistics.

Look at the tags on your clothes or your backpack and see where they were made. There's a chance it was China. Today, the U.S. has an open-trade policy with China, which means goods are traded freely between the two countries, but it wasn't always this way. On February 21, 1972, President Richard M. Nixon arrived in China for an official trip. He was the first U.S. president to visit the People's Republic of China since it was established in 1949. This was an important event because the U.S. was seeking to improve relations with a Communist country during the Cold War. What sorts of issues do you think Nixon discussed?

Other parts of the world were not neglected. In the strategically vital Middle East, Nixon established links with Egypt while maintaining the U.S. commitment to Israel. After the Yom Kippur War of 1973, the U.S. replaced the Soviet Union as the dominant influence in Egypt. On racial matters, Nixon generally adopted a passive stance toward efforts by American blacks to achieve educational, economic, and social equality. He personally opposed busing but insisted that the law be upheld in cases where the courts required it.
