Rather, the Portfolio Option allows students in any English Department program to take certain credits and submit a collection of writing for a certificate. In some programs of study (CD, for instance), the coursework may count toward the degree; in other programs, advisors will determine how many credits can count on the GS-6 (Graduate School Program of Study) form. Sample Class Handout
Here's a typical class plan. I give it out the first day of class and stress that this is an advanced non-fiction course, though I don't exactly know what that meansthough I'm not anxious to read stories of imaginary people doing imaginary things and I expect good writers to write about ideas and thoughts as well as their own lives their experiences.
Reading . During the semester, we will (somehow in many different ways) read most of one book: Eight Modern Essayists , ed. William Smart. I'll give you a schedule for readings in a day or two. We'll also take a look at whatever or whoever else we can bring to class. Instead of discussing all the readings in class, you will keep a simple reading/storage log. (See handout for information about your readings, reading logs.) I will read your log four times during the semester, and it'll be worth two 4- page papers. (See the class calendar for a schedule of readings. (We'll try to read about one author a week in the book.) Writing . You will write something each week. (For the first few weeks, you'll write something short for each meeting. Later on, we'll write longer 4-page papers. As the course progresses, I'll expect you to take more and more command of your own subject matter, direction. You'll do twelve short papers (about one page) and nine longer papers (about 4 pages). You must do all twelve one-page papers. You may choose not to do two of the longer papers.

College Writing Program The College Writing Program - A Brief Introduction The College Writing Program is a program within the English Department at the University of Rhode Island. We offer undergraduate and graduate courses in writing, and we support several important programs and facilities for writing at the collegiate level. Our faculty is committed to the highest quality of teaching and research in Rhetoric and Composition Studies. About Our Courses The College Writing Program offers a wide array of courses in writing at both the graduate and undergraduate level. At the undergraduate level we offer classes in basic writing and specialty courses in business, academic, scientific and technical writing, and advanced non-fiction, as well as in writing in electronic environments, and in the teaching of writing. Students majoring in English may choose a writing emphasis and may take these Wrt courses as part of that emphasis. At the graduate level we offer courses to support a specialization in Rhetoric and Composition Studies within the graduate English degree programs, including an introduction and an advanced seminar in rhetoric as well as a history of composition studies and a course on research methodology. About Our Auxiliary Services In addition to offering writing courses, we support writing through a number of other efforts. Our Writing Center offers one-on-one help with writing for all members of the URI community. Be sure to check its web site for open hours and other information. Tutorial help is also available at CCE Providence. For college-bound high school seniors and their teachers, we offer a special Early Credit Program in Composition for RI High Schools. To find out how to study college composition in a high school setting, check this link. For URI faculty from all disciplines who want to explore effective and new ways to include writing in their courses, we offer The Faculty Institute on Writing.

"No Night is Too Long"
As the story opens, Tim Cornish has been receiving typed notes on yellow legal paper from an anonymous American. The notes tell pieces of the story from which Daniel Defoe based the novel Robinson Crusoe . At this point all we know is that Tim feels targeted and fearful which is wholly different than guilt. The story continues on in the first person narrative as Tim explains his guilt, his fear and how his relations came to be sexually obsessed with an older man name Ivan and a married woman named Isabel. Even now as I thumb through the book to write this summary, I am sucked in to reading page after page. Until I realize that I've just reread this book all over again. And yet again, I find it's a true shocker. (Reviewed 2-7-98) Amazon readers rating: from 10 reviews
