North Carolina Indians
North Carolina's Prehistory This six-part series highlights the history and culture of North Carolina's American Indians. In part one, you'll explore the prehistory - the time before written history - of the first people in the area now called North Carolina. Upcoming segments include present-day tribes in the state, Indian education, tribal government, native languages, and Indian art. North Carolina's Prehistory
American Indians had been living in North Carolina for at least 9,500 years before European explorers first encountered them in the 1520s. Archaeological records and oral and cultural traditions contain clues about these early people.
American Indians in the Paleo-Indian period (10,000-8000 b.c.) were nomadic. They moved often in small groups of one or two extended families. They traveled when and where food sources were most plentiful, hunting animals and gathering wild plants. Archaeologists have found evidence in North Carolina of these early people dating back to about 8000 b.c.
After the Ice Age ended, the climate in North Carolina gradually warmed. This led to an abundance of wild plants, nuts, and small animals. American Indians of the Archaic period (8000-1000 b.c.) changed their patterns of living because of the changing climate. They led a seminomadic lifestyle. In spring they fished along the coast. In summer they occupied the flatlands to gather nuts and plants and to hunt small game. In winter they moved closer to the mountains to hunt large game. They developed new types of stone tools, such as scrapers, drills, and axes.

TRADITION AND INNOVATION:
PRESERVING THE CATAWBA'S CULTURAL HERITAGE
By V. Ann Tippitt and Wenonah Haire
Many centuries ago, along the river that still bears
their name, the Catawba lived in a large expanse of land
that straddled both states of the Carolinas. Today their
tribal home, located outside Rock Hill, SC, is a one-mile-
square reservation. Yet the size of their home has not constrained the size of their spirit. During the 1970s, the Catawba revitalized their cultural identity. They began compiling historical accounts, holding pottery and language classes, and taking action to reclaim their tribal lands and gain Federal recognition.
