What is the Chamber?
The McDowell Chamber of Commerce is a membership association of individuals and firms which encourages and supports:
  • Having positive impact on these goals requires a steady commitment of resources. Roughly 60 percent of the financial backing for the Chamber comes from member dues, enabling staff and over 130 volunteers to plan, update and implement the organization's annual Program of Work.
" What's Good for the Community
    Is GOOD for BUSINESS.
    "

Issues such as education, health care, job-readiness, recreation, transportation, economic diversity, communications and the environment are of vital importance to the Chamber.
    Successful Partners
Businesses working together on common goals will achieve more than any one business alone. Likewise, to help create favorable economic conditions in the McDowell County area, the Chamber partners with government and economic-development agencies. Areas of cooperation include business-industrial recruitment, tourism-recreation development, education, highway improvement, utility expansion, and strategic planning.
    Location
In July of 1995, the McDowell Chamber opened its Visitor Center/headquarters facility on US 221, one mile from downtown Marion. The site is adjacent to the Tate Street exit off US 221, the major north-south corridor for access from the South Carolina into the northwestern N.C. mountain region. Sitting on a panoramic hillside, the new facility has provided excellent access to visitors and potential investors in the community. Through partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation, amenities at the site include public restrooms, picnic areas, public telephones and ample parking spaces.

    Rural Internet Access Authority
    Background
The digital revolution is driving today's economy. Information technology accounts for a sixth of the total U.S. economy and is creating jobs five times faster than the rest of the economy. As a state with major research institutions and cutting edge companies, North Carolina has emerged as a national leader in high-tech enterprises. By 2005, projections show, computer scientists, computer engineers and systems analysts will account for three of four of the fastest growing occupations in the state. Rural North Carolina stands to gain immensely from this digital revolution. Information technology offers increased economic opportunities, higher living standards, more individual choices, and wider and more meaningful participation in government and public life. Information technology can make distance far less important than it used to be. Entrepreneurs can choose to live in small towns and rural communities and still engage in the global data-transmission marketplace. Yet, that dream is far from realized. The recent U.S. Commerce Department study, "Falling Through the Net," reports that North Carolina ranks 45th among the states in households with computers and 46th in the percentage of households using the Internet. The computer "have-nots" are often rural, minority, undereducated and poor.

Winston-Salem Establishes North Carolina’s First University Sponsored High-Speed Regional Hub
    – Network upgrade drastically increases connection speeds for Piedmont-area education, business, and government communities – June 28, 2002– Research Triangle Park, North Carolina – Wake Forest University (WFU), Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), the North Carolina School of the Arts (NCSA) and NCREN (the North Carolina Research and Education Network) announced today the completion of the State’s first university-sponsored high-speed rPOP (regional Point of Presence). Gigabit Ethernet connections between WFU, WSSU and NCSA became fully operational earlier this week. This rPOP, or regional hub, serves as a local access point to high-speed telecommunications services on NCREN’s new Piedmont Ring connecting RTP, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte. The first phase of the three-year project, referred to as NCREN3, is scheduled for completion later this spring when connections to Greensboro, Charlotte, and Greenville become fully operational. Winston-Salem Mayor Alan Joines remarked, "NCREN3 will provide another important component of our city's technology infrastructure and will greatly enhance our efforts to move to a more technology-based economy."

U.S. Teacher Salaries Fall Below Economic Trends
NEA Report Shows Teacher Salaries Not Keeping Pace With Education Investments
July 20, 2002 - Washington, D.C. - America?s teachers did not reap the rewards of increased investment in public education during the 1990s, according to a report released today by the National Education Association (NEA), the nation?s largest professional employee organization. To read the full report, visit: http://www.nea.org/publiced/edstats/rankings/02rankings.pdf Teachers? salaries increased by 3 percent during the decade spanning 1991-2001 when adjusted for inflation. This increase works out to an average annual rate of 0.3 percent a year, according to NEA?s report Rankings and Estimates 2000-2001. During this same period, school revenue receipts, total expenditures, and per-pupil expenditures increased significantly. ?As more money was invested in public education, teacher salaries remained stagnant - all while the U.S. was in the biggest economic expansion in its history,? NEA President Bob Chase said. ?If we, as a nation, are serious about student achievement, we need to make sure we can attract and retain high-quality teachers. Nothing has a more profound effect on a child?s achievement than the quality of his or her teacher, and it?s hard to convince someone to stay in the classroom when the salary is so low.?
